Nothing swings and shoulders like a field O/U.
As long as it is custom fit for the owner. My daughter has a very nice custom O/U. She loves it and can out shoot a lot of men on clays.

That thing gives me a 2nd amendment boner.

A 28 gauge with 30" barrels would be mighty tempting. Normally CSMC starts off offering 20 gauge guns in new models and then expands the offerings later on

You know how I know Wick is rich??
Wick may very well be rich, but that is a very good price point.

That is one good looking O/U. I like the round action and elongated look of the top lever. Sort of reminds me of an unadorned David McKay Brown but a tiny fraction of the cost.

shite, you have rifle scopes that cost more than that...
On a good rifle or scope I would spend that, unfortunatly my shotguns do double duty as boat paddle, hammer, prybar, and even club on occasion, just would not be fitting to use that beauty as such.

Q: what makes the O/U a staple or the gun of choice in the upland community? Is it the look/nostalgia or is it a function thing?
I am not an upland bird hunter but my assumption would be weight of the gun as well as handling. Upland hunting you're walking all day so I would think you would want a light shotgun. Also with O/U having no action they are very well balanced and easy to shoot. Just my $.02.

I understand the premise behind these guns but I just don't get the appeal.
For clays or upland fowl, they're (I mean O/Us generally) the perfect guns. Hell, if I hunted ducks (But early, cold AND wet? frick that), I would hunt ducks with an O/U.
Great balance, great swing, feels much more like an extension of you, than a cumbersome, long barreled pump or semi that you're lugging around, trying to get on target.

What's the reason that o/u's are so much more expensive than pump or automatic shotguns?
Example:
Lowest priced beretta auto: $600
Lowest priced beretta o/u: $2000

If you really want to see where they differ in price, look up the most expensive models of each.

I did and my phone gave me an error saying "if you have to ask you can't afford it"

Double barrel guns (rifle or shotgun) don't lend themselves to cost-cutting measures very well. Even with the advances in CNC there is still hand fitting and tuning. Also it's a matter of market, most people looking to buy such guns aren't looking for bargains.

As stated a couple times already, the balance and shouldering is better but, the main reason I shoot one is because I can have 2 different chokes. If I miss with the first shot I still have a tight enough pattern to carry to the bird with the second.

You can get O/U's new for under $1000. The better guns though with two barrels are harder to align.
I have to say, I shot a $5000ish O/U trap gun a couple of rounds of sporting clays and it was pretty badass. It's hard to explain how well they fit and feel compared to an auto or pump until you use it. Definitely points a little more naturally too.

When you see the fully bespoke guns and the huge price tags, this video will help explain a little into what goes into production of such a gun...

Heck, at my age I need a third shot.
Did a quick woodie hunt yesterday with my daughter. Three shots each, 6 woodies.
Could of shot 20 easy.

If my O/U wasn't so expensive I'd duck hunt with one every day over an Auto. That's coming from from someone shooting a A400 extrema when in the woods. I'm unfortunately not well off enough to take a 5k gun out to shoot ducks.
