re: New deer rifle for my 21 year old daughter

I got my 14 year old 100# daughter a Savage Stevens 334 in 308 last year. I cut an inch and a half off the stock, put a Simms slip on 1" butt pad, and put a timney trigger in it. That damn gun is a tack driver. It loves the Barnes 130 grain ammo. It shoots a legit .5 to.75" groups at 100 yards. The first time she pulled the trigger on it, my daughter said "this one's fun to shoot daddy!" I liked it so much I hunted with her gun all year.

Recoil fear is taught. Kids deserves a gun and ammo that won't fail them when they make a less than perfect shot at the perfect angle. 6.5 CM on down loaded with exploding trash bullets like ELDX don't cut it. That 308 with the 130 grain barnes load is a low recoil death laser. No matter how close the deer is the bullet wont go to shite and not reach vitals in a meaningful manner nor will it fail to exit. Its expanding to a good diameter, cutting more tissue, and making a bigger exit for blood.

I spent weeks obsessing over a 6.5 x 55 swede, 708, and 308 for my girls. This made me feel better about the 308. With the 130 grain barnes the recoil is very mild. I wanted a 708 but the Stevens 308 was cheap and they didn't have a 708. If they did, I would have bought one.

It makes a big difference. With good suppressors the recoil reduction is almost as good as a good muzzle brake, with none of the negatives.

It slows down the gasses escaping plus added weight to the muzzle. It's not as good at taming recoil as a brake but it works.

Every rifles recoil can be tamed to hardly nothing.

Now that I have been enlightened, my kids will hopefully never have to fire an open muzzle rifle.

I need that suppressor so it has even less recoil than the 308!
