re: New Custom Build What Caliber Rifle?

I will eventually. I couldnt find a beater .375 other than weatherby vanguard (howa 1500 action) with mixed reviews on quality. If I knew I'd get a shooter, I'd buy one. Still might before the 06 gets a stock since the mcmillian costs damn near as much. The 06 was very much an impulse buy and I have no idea what I'm going to do with it, other than it will have a nice stock and be a beater rifle.
Howas dont make the best elk rifle builds becuase they are heavy and if im toting a heavy rifle it might as well be a very powerful one.

If the Howa had the Mauser claw I'd be interested in building one.

Yea thatd be best, but it does have an M16 style extractor which is extremely good.
My favorite thing is that it's a big beefy action with a hinged floorplate and realy good two stage trigger/ 3 pos safety. It fixes all the shitty things about the rem 700

It's a hell of a good find, im pretty proud of myself for it. I just have to stop myself, I'm wanting one in 338 win mag now
I’ve been researching to see if a 30-06 could be converted to a 338 win mag. Internet consensus is just buy a 338 win mag.

Youd need a barrel change and the gunsmith would have to open the bolt face up.
If they dont make a 338 win mag, you could get any long action magnum and change the barrel.

The blued 7 mags and 300's come up for sale pretty often as well.
The problem people have is that they buy them and find the factory barrel shoots too good for them to stomach taking it off.
Have you Ever had a bolt face modified? 338 win mag would definitely be my "only own one caliber" choice

What's it do that a dozen other establish calibers dont?
Jumping back in here after a long absence to answer this question. The 26 Nosler is a blazing 6.5 cartridge that fills a hole in my caliber inventory.

Why not just cut a new chamber and rebore the original barrel (in addition to opening the bolt face)?

You may be able to do that but it would not be a simple process and would probably cost as much or more than a new barrel.
Swapping barrels is a pretty simple process.
eta: the new bore wouldn’t be that hard to do with the right tools, but the cutting new rifling would probably take specialized equipment.
I honestly don’t know what all goes into cutting the rifling.

Yea all the noslers on paper make more sense than the stable of calibers they are meant to unseat.
For it's intended use, the 7mm rem mag makes more sense. Much more load options and longer barrel life. 264 win mag got the barrel cooking 6.5 right long ago.
I think the noslers and most new calibers coming out these days are just watering down the market. None of them (besides 375/416 ruger) offer large advantages over their older family of cartridges IMO. The noslers still require a long action and long barrel to do their thing.
Weatherby has had offerings that cover the whole spectrum forever.

Nope, but ive never made a change like that. It shouldnt be a big deal for a gunsmith though.
You could also call the manufacturer and see if they would sell you a replacement bolt with the magnum bolt face.

Probably cost as much as a new barrel and youd have to find a gunsmith with that capability.

All that would probably cost more than just buying a rifle in the desired caliber.
I wish they had the cerekoted actions in a belted mag caliber on that sale, I really want a 338 win mag or 375 h&h
I'm kind of butthurt that they offer the vanguard in all kinds of cool calibers but the howa is only offered in standard stuff. Guess the old boring standby .30-06 will have to do.

Right, just saying if you couldn't find one or if they didnt make one.
There is always a way. Just cost money.

Yep. I want a 35 whelen bolt gun and they are slim pickings.
I'm constantly wrestling with whether or not I want to commit to an oddball like 338/06, or modify a rifle into a 338 win mag or 35 whelen. Part of me wants to do it, part of me knows it makes no practical sense to do so.
I do know that I want to build a gun

I’d go for a 338-06, but I don’t reload and ammo is slimmer than for 35 Whelen... and it costs $80/box.

375 h&h
I picked up a Weatherby Mark V Sporter in 375 H&H for a song a few years ago. It’s in decent shape, but it was used in Alaska for a number of years. Trying to decide if I want to turn it into an all weather rifle (Black T or Cerakote and B&C stock), or have the stock refinished and the action and barrel reblued to bring it back up to its former glory.

Build you a gun Downshift.
It’s a whole heck of a lot easier than I expected.
You can get a trued Remington action for $475 in blued and $495 for stainless.
With the Remage barrel system it’s easy
It will cost a little but if you had one gun in .338 would it be that bad?
Here’s the trued action
Northland supply

I had a 6.5x300 but it wouldn’t shoot my choice of bullet (140 grain Berger VLD) so I sold it. I already own a 7MM WBY. I am a huge fan of WBY cartridges and rifles, but in the 6.5 niche their product didn’t work for me.

That was on the menu until I impulse bought the howa, which I think I'll be very happy with.
If I am, its saving for a 375
