Pellet gun. Make a game of it.

There’s a little box that holds rat poison. I don’t think the squirrels will be able to get into the small opening.

Honestly, the most effective answer is to get a yard cat.

To be clear you want to kill the ground rats while not harming the tree rats.
good luck with that

Pellet gun.
Yup. Lead poisoning is very selective.

Yep. After Katrina I had a field day with rats. Must have killed dozens of them after I got back home to fix up the house damage.
That Benjamin Pump .177 did the trick.

Go to Home Depot and get some rat only poison

It’s going to be hard to kill the rats and not the squirrels. Like others said get a pellet gun and lawnchair with some ice cold beer and make it fun. If a squirrel gets into the poison it will die.

Take a 5 gallon bucket, fill it about 1/3rd with water. Pour in a bag of whole sunflower seeds so you can't really see the water anymore. Place a piece of 1x4 like a ramp up the side and leave a trail of sunflower sees.
I killed off alot of rats and Chipmunks over the years like this and never had a squirrel fall in

Bruh that's the biggest crock of shite ive ever heard. We have had yard and barn cats our whole lives. They all will and do catch rats damn near half there size at times. Also mice, gophers, and moles don't stand a chance either.

Squirrel = rat with a bushy tail. I fear violence with a pellet gun is your only option

At the risk of sounding too hippie for this board, rat poison is terrible. It kills so many unintended animals. The rats eat the the poison and stagger out into the yard/woods, then owls, foxes, bobcats, hawks, and a tons of other animals eat them and die too.
You'd be better off trying to figure out some way to make the feeder more rat-proof. Put it so the squirrels have to jump a short distance to it. Put some kind of catcher under it to keep spilled food off the ground. Shoot the rats you see.

My cat killed all rats and now destroys squirrels. My son and I were joking yesterday after finding his latest casualty that kitty may need to come squirrel hunting with us. Later in the day, after finding the dead squirrel, the cat was playing with the thing, rolling around throwing it into the air, just having a grand time lol. My daughter says, "aww he just wants to play". Killing machines!
