The battery I bought was made by champion I believe.. not some cheap imported shite

I wasn't clear in my post. I replaced both batteries with brand new ones as well from a battery supply house. I wanted to put in bigger batteries, but the battery compartment wasn't big enough. The new batteries did not fix my problem. I think the batteries were undersized.

A little update:
Took off the brakes and disconnected the chain, then took off the cover for the gearbox along with the chain inside the gearbox. As soon as we disconnected the chains, the rear end was finally able to spin freely. As soon as we put the chains back on, the rear end loocked up again.. the chain inside the gearbox was REALLY tight while it was on the sprockets, not sure what the deal was there.
Anyways, while the chains were off, we connected the battery and tried to start it and it turned over a few times which was uplifting.. tried to turn it over a few minutes later, NOTHING.. not even a crank
Ran out of daylight and started getting hangry, I’ll get back at it tomorrow

Confirms nothing wrong with rear end/axle/brake.

Rear end didn't lock up again. The rear axle will not turn with the chain on if the engine or clutch/drive gear is locked up. Did you try cranking the engine over with the spark plug out? With no compression the engine should spin over easily. If not the clutch/front sprocket/drive system may be locked up.

For a 4 year old, throw that thing away and order the razor electric dirt quad from Walmart.com. I got them on sale for my kids right before Christmas for about $350 each and they have been great. My 9 year old rides all over the back yard and it goes pretty quick. Your 4yo could get a lot if use out of it.

Yes, it was off the whole time we were messing with it
When I said ‘the rear end locked up’, I meant that the wheels wouldn’t turn. I understood that we eliminated the rear end as the problem
Like I said, the first time we tried starting it once we took the chains off, it tried repeatedly to crank, which was encouraging.. after that, NOTHING. Wouldn’t even ‘click’ when we tried starting it

He’ll be five next month, and has been riding four wheelers pretty much his whole life. I really wanted to get him a gas ATV, and this was was given to me for free, and has less than an hour of run time on it.. it’s a nice looking bike, I forgot to take pictures of it while I was at my dad’s
Plus, it gives me and my old man something to tinker around with. My first four wheeler was a little Suzuki 50 that my paw paw fixed up so I guess we’re trying to start a family tradition

Understood. Been through that type of frustration with go karts, mowers and 4 wheelers and it can be frustrating.

Yea I hear ya.. we are making progress though. Was glad to see the back wheels spinning today, was worried that something was seriously wrong. Still have no clue why it tried turning over earlier, then absolutely stopped right after.
Clearly these things aren’t built well. But if I can get one year out of a free ATV, I’d be more than happy

Update:
Took apart the gearbox, then opened up the clutch and found that only two of the three springs were left.. the third spring was all torn up inside the housing.. had to order a three pack of springs for only $7 so I think we will be good to go. I’ll update the thread Tuesday and let y’all know if I get it running. Thanks for the help fellas
Pic of the clutch:
The motor turned over fine once I got the clutch out of the bind. I didn’t attempt to really start it because I want to clean out the carburetor first, but the motor turned over for me today which is great news

Looks like you found the culprit. Hope your kid enjoys it.

Thanks bud.. We won’t know for sure if it’s good to go til the springs come in on Tuesday. I’m actually pretty confident that it’ll be alright. Tomorrow I’ll take the carb off and soak it for a few days then blow it out.. Even though the gas looks and smells fine, I’m gonna drain the tank and put some fresh gas in it just to be sure
I wonder how many people had this same problem and just trashed their bikes. I didn’t know what I was really doing at first (I’m a decent mechanic but I thought this was over my pay grade
) but it’s honestly such a simple fix if you have metric sockets and combo wrenches
