300 win mag is more powerful by a long shot. It also shoots .30 rounds which have a far better selection in the reload department. I also like the accuracy better out of my 300 than my 7mm.

Once I choose one, I will use for life. If the 300 is overkill for larger animals, will the 7 be suffice with higher grain bullets? Or just get the 300 and not worry?

Ok. Might have to take a look at the 300's.

Thanks!

I use the 300 for whitetail and hogs. You may hangup that 270 after shooting a nice 300.

Another option is the 300 Rem ultra mag. They make 3 diff power levels of ammo for it

Get the 300. You won't regret it. You can tag big game at long distances if you have the skill to place the shot.

Seriously though, some people will tell you that all "real" elk rifles start with "3". Personally, I can't imagine the 7mm falling short.

They won't. The only plus is at longer ranges, not that the 7mm won't get there. You also have to realize to that the elk people live by the Weatherby code. If you don't shoot a Weatherby then you don't shoot a rifle.

The 7mag is pretty much The standard elk rifle. Flat shooting an bringing enough arse without being too rough on the shoulder.

I would prefer a .30-06 inside of 200 yards. I'll be the first one to admit that im not a fan of recoil.

300 Win Mag.

30-06 with heavier bullets will definitely do it, but the jump from .270 to there isn't as much as it is to the .300. I mean, you can kill all that stuff with a .270, you might as well step up to something with a bigger difference than the '06 would be.

I have never heard this.

My 7mm STW is pushiing 165 pills at about 3100. Now, granted, you won't get that out of a 7mm Rem, but you should be able to get 2800 all day, depending on barrel length. Now, unless you're shooting elk at 1000 yards, that should be more then enough to get the job done.

I'm NOT a big magnum guy, although I do own a few. There's been many an moose meet his maker at the hands of the lowly 6.5 swede. That's a pretty big f'n animal. just saying.

If i was turning into an elk, bear, And moose hunter, i'd probably get a .300 or maybe even a .338

Take off that last one and i'd probably go with a 7mag or a .264 win mag
