I am looking to fire the lawn guy and purchase a self-propelled mower soon, but can't decide what brand to get. I have looked at Lowe's a good bit, but the guys there don't know much about the products they sell.

What I'm looking for:
1. Price range of 300 to 500 bucks
2. Starts easy (gonna put the wife on it this summer)
3. Low maintenance

My yard is flat as all get out, and it will be used once a week. Does anyone have any success stories or ones to stay away from?

TIA

There was a discussion on the OT last week and Toro was the top pick.

You can't beat the one for $299 sold at HD and Lowes, it's a great lawnmower for home use. I actually use one of those and a Snapper to cut about 12 lawns (side job). Snapper is the tits but out of your price range.

ETA: Don't get the Personal Pace Touro, it just has more things to break. Aslo, a rear wheel self propelled will be stronger, but harder to maneuver.

mine as well. You will have to replace the drive pulleys every 3-5 years, but well worth it.

Toro is most likely going to be my choice.

My Walmart sp mower has been abused for 6 seasons so far and still runs like a champ. It rolls over everything. Starts first time. All I ever did to it was last season blew the dirt out of the air filter for the first time. 150 bucks well spent.

Toro. High rear wheel. Front wheel drive. Awesome mower. I've had 2(1 stolen). Even my wife can use it.

I agree with you Chad. Had the best experiences with one of those.

My wife has no problems starting our self propelled Snapper.

Reliable, cuts well, easy to start and its within your price range.

I bought a Refurbished Toro a few months back from Home Depot. Very easy to use.

Here was the thread when I bought it

I will report back in a few weeks with pics of her pushing the Toro in the LSU bikini.

Just a general question: Why a self-propelled mower? I've never had one before and I just don't see what is the appeal. If I have to walk behind the mower anyway, I might as well push.

Why buy a new mower if you aren't wanting a self propelled. Just pass by the nearest garage sale and offer $3.75 for the piece of pushing shite.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I've got a lawn service. Life is too short to spend mowing grass. I'd rather go fishing.

The main point here is that I purchase something that is easy to maintain and wife-friendly. She wouldn't be so eager to push a mower around, but will be more apt to do so if it is self-propelled.
