My knife bit the bullet this weekend and I need some recommendations. I've looked on line, but think the OB is a better judge. I fish trout, reds, and flounder, if that helps. TIA

corded Bubba Blade. Friend has the battery powered one and mine is a little stronger than his. Plus, I'm always near a power source when cleaning fish. The skinny blade is excellent on small tender fish like Sacalait and trout. Big blades tear thru big fish like Redfish and cobia.
I used to use the American Angler blue series knife. This knife is the bees-knees.

Lots of redfish guides use that knife.

BB, have used one on a couple trout at the lodge and it is smoove and fast. When my AA's crap the bed will buy a couple.

I also have serrated Dexter Russel that I machined to fit a small handheld skill saw when Filetzall first came out and wanted you to buy the whole blade/skillsaw together. I will say it was nice on redfish but the big double hinged blades on the Bubba are up to the task. I don't use my filetzall anymore.

I have the cordless version and it has plenty of power.
I tried the thinner blades on trout and it seems to kind of mess up the meat, like not a smooth cut. I used my American angler blades in the Bubba Blade and it seemed to work better.
Any one else notice that?

Just know that it is longer, heavier and you must maintain the battery by keeping it charged. And it's about $50 more expensive. Academy actually has a corded version with 2 blades instead of 4 for $99. I got mine on sale for $89 a while back.

I've had great luck with the Rapala cordless. Have cleaned a bunch of reds with it too.

True story. Was fishing with a coonass guide in Golden Meadow years ago when the topic of the best electric filet knife topic came up. He said the Hamilton Beach one was the best but when he ordered them he always got 3 because 9 times out of 10 two out of three of them didn't work.

What's with the skinny blades? It seems like that would make it harder to stay on the same plane - like cut through the spine or get wavy and leave meat on the bone. Like trying to cut a straight line with a scroll saw. No?
I'm asking because I'm going to need a new fillet knife before too much longer.

Which of the bigger blades do you use for reds?

I have the same knife. It does a decent job.
