high shoulder shot is my go-to also. little low and you probably hit heart and will hit lungs. a little high and you clip the spine.

The neck shot is a VERY good shot for deer hunting, as long as: the hunter knows his deer anatomy; both the gun and hunter are accurate enough for the shot; the hunter demonstrates some judgment on when to take, or not take, a neck shot. I think EVERY deer hunter should be able to make a neck shot. There could be a situation where that's the available killing shot. OTOH, for the hunter who can make the neck shot, there's no reason to limit it to does. One of the advantages of the neck shot is that there'll be NO trailing to do. That's good for does AND bucks. Learn your anatomy and angles. Look at pics of deer anatomy and dissect the neck down to the spine on the neck few deer you skin. The handguns I hunt w/ are challenging enough making nice lung shots so that's what I do. Good luck.

The other nice thing about a neck shot is no mess in the body cavity. You roll those guts out and the rest is easy. No clean up.

I'm not a firm believer in neck shots. Shot placement off slightly and it can be non fatal. They may hit the deck, but it can be just a paralyzing affect with poor placement. I don't like looking for a deer either, but behind the shoulder in the vitals damages no meat and even though they may run a bit, the animal will die quickly. Hitting lungs, liver, or heart is the most effective and humane way to kill an animal.

That's a good point and reminds me of something I meant to mention. One of my hunting buddies shoots a lot of neck shots on does. He likes to make a soft bleating sound just before the shot to freeze the deer so it's head/neck won't be moving.

I had one this morning walking straight at me and would never give me the side shot. Still kicking myself for not taking the neck shot. I could be home barbecuing now.

There are no non lethal areas in the neck.

High powered rifle shot to the neck is not survivable. I have never had a single deer I neck shot take a step.

I don't deer hunt any more but when I did it was my preferred shot. You are much more apt to shoot one in the gut instead of the lungs or heart if shooting behind the shoulder.

It is an easier shot than trying to shoot exactly behind the shoulder but in front of the gut.

I would have to disagree with you there buddy, I was shot with a 7mm-08 from 65 yards IN THE NECK. It is a survivable injury and one that comes with miserable nerve pain for what I'm told could be the rest of my life. I will agree it's not common to survive a neck shot, but after having a personal reason to research it I found that it's more common than you would imagine.

Does = shoot the vitals. Wastes zero meat and is 100% lethal
Big deer = center the front shoulder and anchor him right there

I have neck shot deer and had success but there's very little margin for error. Also a neck shoot is what turned me off of Win Silvertips. I neck shot a doe with a 25-06 shooting Silvertips a few years ago and it never exited. Killed her though and made jelly of about a 8" section of neck. I just prefer 2 holes. I absolutely 100% refuse to take a head shot on a deer. This stems from having to go track a doe shot by a buddy(who is one of the best shots I personally know)he pulled just a hair and shot her lower jaw off. We had to track her the morning after he shot her the evening before and she was still alive and up but missing her lower jaw. Fact remains accidents happen and 95% of people ain't as good a shot as they would like to believe they are. We owe it to the deer to make as ethical and quick killing of a shot as we possibly can

The third deer I killed was a doe head shot. The 1st two were mgmt bucks and through the lung/heart. I was 16 and full of myself. She walked out and faced me eating browse and put her head down for what seemed like 30 min and I was itchy. I put the crosshairs dead center on the top of her head and squeezed a round. She dropped instantly and didn’t move. I gave her the standard 15-20 minutes just watching and waiting. When I got to her she had no entrance wound on her head at all. I had pulled slightly or over estimated her distance and hit her in the spine on her neck. While it was a quick ethical kill, I realized at 16, it was too big of a risk and decided to never do it again. It’s just too easy to get a lung/heart shot and not risk wounding an animal. I’ve never lost a deer and hope I never do.

Same thing can be said for behind-the-shoulder shots.

Well that’s just not true.

I think neck and shoulder shots are pretty equal in effectiveness.

Unethical to neck shoot, bottom line. Just not much margin of for error and that error leaves a deer in a situation of starvation in most cases.

Yeah, but there's a lot more margin for error w/ a behind the shoulder shot compared to a neck shot.

Yeah, but a well made neck shot kills and drops the deer instantaneously. A deer shot behind the shoulder may run 100 yards or more.

For me, I think of the neck shot as shot for certain situations. Given the small margin of error and anatomy, the neck shot should be an "expert's" shot.
