I’ve got two slices from the base of a cottonwood tree that had two separate rings and looks really awesome. I’ve been trying to decide what to do with them. They’re about 40” in diameter and about 6 inches thick. Any ideas?
You could make coffee tables. But the grain direction on cookies like that will make it tough to keep them from cracking. How long have you been drying them? Do you know the moisture content?

Not sure on the moisture. They have been in my garage for about 2-3 years, no cracking so far.
Isn't cottonwood a bitch to work with?

I think so, but with so much end grain, you're not going to be milling boards out of them. If you made tables, you could attach the base in a way that allowed for movement. You could fill any existing cracks with dark tinted epoxy and then seal it up. If it cracked significantly in the future, you could add more epoxy. Obviously, the thicker you leave them, the more stable they'll be. And heavy.

No, a soft wood. If you try to take some cookies out of it, keep them 3"-4" thick. Sticker them when you stack them and slow dry.

Can never get the gaps closed without splitting the damn wood tho.
Wetting the wood will help. Leave the wedge extra long. Once the wood dries out, you can knock the wedge in more.

Got the top plate that covers the sliding track door.
Of course I had to take the door down to varnish out the door trim. Will get the door back up in the morning.

Anyone have a reccomendation for a place in BR where I can buy some solid oak 4x4s for table legs? I’m trying to make a small workbench for my garage.

Got to love a plan when things work out.
Some braces that I replaced due to the old ones I didn't care for. Out with the old and in with the new. One problem, aging oak is a bit of a problem, maybe.
Before any stain. All braces look like this.
After staining.
The stain is 1 qt vinegar and two small steelwool pads pulled apart. 8 days later and testing the stain on scrap lumber, I think I hit a home run.

Why thanks.
Going to try in rap this project up by summer. Only been working on it three years, but this is as custom built as one can go.

Email me again. I can saw up some for you, but you will have to come help.
Got a couple oak logs that are about 22" wide and 9' long. I can't handle those by myself right now.

Ok will do. I’m undecided on how I want to do the legs on the bench though.

I built a light for my son's changing table. He loves to stare up at it.
