Looking for a decent place to buy a lake house within a few hours of SELA. There's lots of reservoirs in north la and central miss but those are a haul. Anything similar to that closer?

Eta: This would be for two-three families with kids ranging from 0-9. We would want to be able to tow them behind a party barge so would want relatively low traffic area. Would also want perch jerkin and somewhere we could have a large nice covered deck.

Should have put in OP, will update it.

Does the diversion canal fit that?

Maybe not quite that bad but there's plenty of them there.

You can run to the Amite, Blind River or on Calm days, to lake Maurepas to tube. ImHO it is better to have a place close that gets used a lot than to have a place farther away that never gets used after the first year...

For a different idea take a look at sandstone lake in enon. It's a 500 acre gravel pit lake. IMO one of the best kept secrets in SE LA.

It's by no means perfect but we have been happy with it for some time bought a lot about five years ago no camp yet but one day soon.

On larto: if we ventured that far, we'd likely just go to caney lake
On Jordan river: looks pricey for the more spacious areas
On sandstone lake: can you build a dock/boat house? Looks kind of tight.
On diversion: we'd want something where the kids can swim off the dock and we can pull them right in front of there

I guess I didn't include des alemands and Verret because I'm not sure how safe it is for kids swimming near the dock (possibly same issue as larto).

On Sandstone yes absolutely someone just built a monstrosity of house, deck and boathouse. Two more going in now.

False River or Old River in Bachelor, La. You can catch tons of catfish at false River n the spring, it would be fun for the kids, and the bream fishing gets pretty good too.

Old River is nice, but you can only catch fish when the water gets "right" and the water gets very high so your camp would have to be on stilts. However, when old river does get "right" its some of the best fishing around, you can catch many a sac-a-lait fishing right underneath your peir. Clean and clear water there too.

Check out lake Louie near Sicily island also. Pretty underrated and not terribly crowded. Good ski place and good fishing too

Hideaway Lake in Picayune, MS. About an hour drive from New Orleans. Private lake with a nice club house/recreation area.
