Myth that snakes don't/won't strike under water

Killed this guy yesterday. First kill with my new VP9. Obviously it had just ate something. I hung it on the fence and continued to the river.

Came back through several hours later and something had been eating on it. As you can see, he had a fish in his stomach.

This is the second snake I've killed with a fish in it stomach. So if you're one who thinks a snake can't/won't strike under water, think again.
Not sure what was eating him, didn't see any tracks. Thinking a coon, armadillo, or a maybe a hog.

I caught a water snake once while fishing a worm Texas rigged on bottom in about 7' of water. Never knew the snake was there, felt a bump, set the hook and reeled in a snake.
Moral to story: he bit my worm under water.

Water snakes do typically strike their prey under water.
A misnomer would be calling that a "mocassin"
Misconception is the word you were looking for.

I usually don't get in on these but yes this is a water snake. It eats fish. Eating and striking out of defense would be two different things.

It would be pretty damn rare to get a meal for a fish-eating snake if they didn't strike under water.
Harmless diamondback water snake, btw.

Myth, not "misnomer." But cool pics.

Love it. Great gun for the price. Stop considering and go buy it.

It's pretty well known that the "snakes won't bite underwater" is a myth.

I realize it's a water snake. I killed a stump tail moccasin about 3 years ago with about a 2 pound catfish in his stomach.
I've heard a lot of people say it's impossible for a snake to strike under water. Maybe I just know a lot of dummies.
