But we shouldn't swim there because it's a dangerous place and we can prevent shark attacks by not swimming there. Because I am self aware I can avoid being attacked by just not going where the sharks are.
I ain't gonna lie, I ain't gettin in no water that potentially has sharks. frick that.

This just recently happened. The only reason the couple lived is the criminal was obviously a bad shot. The criminal did fire first though, because the other guy's instincts (who was special forces trained) told him to not fire on the guy yet. This was bad instincts regardless of his training. He had the upper hand at that point. He could have changed the odds and been one step ahead of the criminal with the element of surprise and shot first, since the criminal didn't even know he had the gun. In the end the gun might have saved the couple, but partially out of luck.

So I should have no defense in that situation?

Just assume that I'll get robbed at some point in life and have no option to deter it?

Hey guys, pack it in. There is nothing we can do to deter crime or defend ourselves other than self awareness.

Kind of a shitty way to look at life isn't it?

No more than being afraid to go swimming because you might get bit by a shark.

Exactly. It's not like any of those carrying are ever going to use them anyway.
Perhaps you're right.
I've had to brandish at a crackhead on chippewa who thought beating on my windshield while I waited for a tow truck was a great idea. Apparently he really wanted that cigarette I was smoking.
The one time I should have used it, there was a heroin addict in new orleans who pulled a knife on my wife and I. The guy was moving so slow, and he was so young, I couldn't bring myself to shoot him. I let my wife hold the gun and rather violently disarmed him. The cops showed up, and thank god NOPD let me walk away rather than deal with it.
He had at least a dislocated shoulder and possibly a broken hip from hitting the ground.
In retrospect it was stupid and I should have shot him.
I seem to be a magnet for stupidity like that, a kid pulled an empty revolver on me in broad daylight in 2004ish. Didn't have a single bullet in the gun.
Had a kid pull a knife in the parking lot of cortana mall in 2002ish.
It's always someone under the influence and always in an area that isn't what you would call...bad. Cept chippewa. That was just a freak accident

I say better to be prepared and not need it then to not be prepared and need it.
Chance favors those most prepared.

Like the fine china and plastic couch covering my grandmother had in case the Pope dropped by.* I mean, it could happen.

I don't enjoy swimming. That's why I don't go in the water. But I surely wouldn't go swimming in water full of sharks.

Helmet and fire suit? No. Seat belt? Yes. I look at a CC weapon as a seat belt. Full battle rattle as more the helmet and fire suit.

swimming with sharks or new york city subways at 2am.... tough call...

You are just dumb to try to use logic with Alx, he is too stupid to comprehend it

1. Might happen. Probably true for those who walk around in Condition "White."
2. But I think it's not real likely for others.
3. People tend to see others as they see themselves.
I'm with Broke -- having options is not a bad thing.
I'm amazed at the mentality of a couple of members (and a few students who have attended my CCW classes) who seem to think the odds of needing a gun for self-defense are astronomically high.
They might be really high for those who live in Kansas, or in BF South Dakota.
But even if the odds are high, "the odds" shouldn't be the factor that determines whether or not you carry. It's not "the odds" -- it's the potential consequences of needing a gun and not having one.
p.s. Tom Givens puts the odds of being the victim of a violent crime (murder/homicide, forcible rape, armed robbery or aggravated assault), in the US, at 1:57 - that ain't astronomically high.
* There were 5.6 million violent crimes reported to law enforcement in 2013. (Source: FBI Uniform Crime Report/Bureau of Justice Statistics' Annual Crime Survey).
*The population of the US in 2013 was about 316.7 million.
Do the math.

I was mugged by a dude in Scotlandville when I was just out of high school. It's not a pleasant experience. I had some luck with me that day and he did it in front of a cop.

I carry at all times. When I am asked what I am scared of, I say not a thing. Speaking as a retired LEO, police record what happened in most cases, they appear AFTER the fact. I would rather be the one giving the statement!!!
