I use a Fenix HM71R headlamp. I primarily use the headlamp so I can keep my hands free, and it’s great for illuminating the snakes while I get pics/video with my cellphone. When the bugs get too bad in my face, I’ll switch to a Fenix flashlight for a bit, then switch back to the headlamp again.
Rarely do I have someone get pics/video of me - only if it’s a special snake. In those cases I’ll take my headlamp off so I’m not blinding the camera. But whoever is filming will keep the light low enough that I’m not being blinded by it.
Trust me - I don’t freehandle haphazardly. I want a pic or video of myself with the really special catches, but I don’t have enough instagram followers to risk my life for a little shock value.

Maybe if you are ignorant to the reasons snakes bite to being with.
Venomous snakes don’t bite with predation in mind. They are not aggressive.
Venomous bites are defensive in nature. They feel threatened.
Not in close proximity = not getting bitten.
Educate your kids, and if you’re fearful for them because they are super young, consider walking out the area and watch them close. See one? There are plenty of free relocation experts in most areas.
Killing snakes is a convenience thing unless someone gets bitten and doesn’t have a phone/camera, and need to prove what bit them at the hospital.

I really don’t plan to educate my kids to not play outside, within 12 feet of my back door. I want them to take risks, to feel confident in their abilities, to learn.
If they happen to be wrestling outside with another 7 year old, within 12 feet of my back door, and roll up on an unseen copperhead and get bit, I consider that part of life an an acceptable risk, an an unfortunate unforeseen occurrence.
I took the snake to the hospital for confirmation, and they later (without my knowing or approval) released the snake. Since then I catch all I see, and if they are copperheads, then they see the bandsaw

Thanks! Most of them are taken with a camera. I think all of those are from a camera.

19. Chihuahuan Night snake Crazy it has the cat eyes but narrow head. Weird. Never seen one before does not look like a pit viper at all. You no they are classifying hognose as venomous now?
8. Alterna phase Gray-banded kingsnake I swear I kinda caught this snake or something that looked just like it a straight massive intimidating snake in Crystal beach tx day after the tropical storm that fricked everything up this year. Absolutely massive I didn’t get a picture as my wife was screaming at me to let it go lol. It had to of been over 6’ it went racing by the dunes and started to get under a washed out slab under-a dilapidated beach house when I got ahold of its tail. It was huge I had its tail and the snake peaked up between a crack in the concrete looking at me like over4’ away like wtf let me go. Wife was flipping out so I did not try and get it.
22. Canebrake rattlesnake
I absolutely hate this damn thing they just scare me I won’t ever try and trap one

Yeah they keep adding more and more to the list - even garter snakes have a neurotoxic venom. It’s mild, but a well known guy in Florida herping circles that I met has a bad allergic reaction to their venom, so he won’t pick up a garter snake.

Not being a bug guy, those freaked me out on the first trip. But after my friends coerced me into handling them, now I think they are too cool.
They are also called whip scorpions, but aren’t really scorpions. The name vinegaroon comes from a defensive habit - they spray predators with an irritant, acetic acid, which smells like vinegar.

While I support your ability to do this and enjoy, your freehandling of venomous snakes is going to get you hurt one day. Be careful.
I watch NFHerping guy on youtube. It really does look fun, do you know him?

Haven’t met him yet. Herped with a few of the most popular social media guys and ran into another when he showed up at our spot fresh off a flight, but not NKFherping yet. He is very well respected by the other guys though.

Snakes, airplanes, playing golf, hunting and such are fascinating to me. And sex. With a female, but not with a snake bigger than mine.

What about the Burmese pythons? Considering they are invasive and a problem in Florida
Posted on 1/7/25 at 7:01 am to Mstate
Only got Burmese so far (one of my friends got an 11-12 footer last night), but none of us kill them. We just aren’t capable of killing snakes. And realistically, that genie ain’t going back into the bottle.
