My son got his first deer (a 4 point). Follow up to gun caliber advice back in August.

Earlier this year I was looking for advice on a gun for him with a little worry about recoil for him. I was asking about a 6.5 Creedmoor and had decided on a 7mm-08 then ended up with a 270 with the Walmart Weathery Vanguard Select clearance.

He had several deer come out from youth hunt till today but today was the day he was able to get a clean shot. He shot a 4 point at 120 yards. Put it right behind the front shoulder and hit the top of the heart. Deer ran about 40 yards before it dropped. Didn't even find a drop of blood where he deer was standing when he shot. Thought he may have missed but the deer jumped right after he shot so I felt he must of hit it.

My BIL is a member of the club and has a dog that tracks deer. Waited on my BIL, his two kids, and my FIL before we started to track it. Let the dog do its thing and within a few minutes she found it.

What a great experience to have with my son. He is hooked. That gun in my son's hands is a great little shooter. I asked if he felt the gun kick when shooting and he said no.

Am I the only one that thinks this does not compute?

I am wondering if there was no exit wound, and if the bullet hit the far shoulder/leg bones and it didn't exit?

I've shot dozens of deer with my .270, and made some gaping exit wounds.

Great for you and your son OP, congrats.

Caliber and recoil isn’t really for the actual hunt thoughts more for practice. In before I thought only a .243 left poor blood trails.

I've never had a problem with my 270 exiting either.
My son shot a 190 lb 8 point this year at 220 yards. 130 grain interlock passed through both sholders..

It takes a gun to kill a deer... But it takes balls to catch a hog.

There was an exit wound. Can't explain why we didn't find blood at area where he shot the deer. The doe I shot a few weeks back left blood everywhere. Using Remington 130g CoreLokts.

This happens to me sometimes.
Near perfect shot placement. Very little blood.
I often have to track it down the established deer trails and find it that way.
When scared, I figure they'll run to and follow familiar territory.

Lemme guess...ballistic tips?

Eta-core lokts have always left good blood trails. Oh well

I had to reach deep in the bullet wound to get just a little blood to put on his face. It wasn't until we put the deer on the 4-wheeler that it started to bleed. Even dragging it out of the woods it didn't really bleed much.

My BIL dog did awesome. Once he stuck her nose down she didn't pick it up until she found the deer.

OB is the only place on TD where people actually enjoy each other.

Congrats to your son, and to you Dad!

Congratulations, Dad (and son too, obviously)!! Deer hunting w/ my now grown up son are some of the best memories and experiences I've had. Enjoy these times. And just realize there may come a time in the future when he's not so excited about deer hunting (can you say "girls"??) Nowadays my son lives too far off and his life's too busy w/ work for him to go hunting w/ me. Sounds like you both did good! And it was really good for a heart shot deer to only run 40 yards. In my experience it's usually more like 100 yards or more. Next time, after finding the deer, you might try to work the backtrack to see if there was a blood trail and at what point into it's run the blood trail started.

ETA: Was he shooting reduced recoil loads or full power loads? how big was the exit wound?

Full loads. I didn't measure but both entry and exit wounds. They were about an index finger wide.

Yes, It was on Louisiana Deer Hunter's page.
