That's how this guy thinks. Anybody who thinks that way should quit hunting IMO. If you can't be happy for a man who is proud of himself for something completely legal, you're missing the point.

We have deer dying of old age in our woods with huge racks that nobody has ever laid an eye on. 10 people can't influence this herd.

Such a difficult concept for some people

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and can hunt how they choose, but many people(not necessarily anyone n this thread) use excuses such as " I'm not a trophy hunter" " we don't have any big deer here" or "if I don't shoot him the neighbor will" as justification for shooting everything.

Some people really don't care about that, and that's great, but many of those people refuse to let young deer walk, yet bitch about not shooting big bucks and place the blame on genetics, neighbors, and the area they hunt.

Again, enjoy hunting however you choose.

Some like the idea of shooting anything with fur and bone on its head and some don't.

Maybe I misunderstood what's going on in here. I thought I read earlier that some thought less of others for shooting smaller than idea bucks and if that's the case that's just plain dumb. I understand management but if you are happy with what your killing and it's not on my land, that's just great. I think a lot less of someone that thinks he's better than someone for what deer he kills than someone with a dang doe or 4 pt. Anyway, it's always fun chatting Bout it.

I was the first to say something about antlers. When he said I know it's not massive antlers I thought I was missing them somehow, didn't know they were not there completely. I don't look down my nose at someone who shoots a basket rack deer but I think it is silly if you're shooting them year after year and complaining about having no big deer. It has all been said already so nothing I can say here that is any diff. It is more challenging to shoot a mature doe than it is one of those little young bucks. I have been on 2 diff. clubs the last 3 yrs and got out because I'm not paying that money to hunt with people who hunt " If it's brown it's down" and the members complain they have no big deer. Well no shite, if ya'll would let them walk you would have some nice racked deer walking around. Now the hunting over corn part, so someone is gonna say that is less sport than turning dogs lose and having them run the deer out? Come on man, I have hunted in all these aspects and am not opposed to anyone hunting with them as long as it doesn't infringe on someone else's hunt. When I was a teen hunting in south MS I was excited the first time I seen, much less killed one of those basket racks. Well I soon learned it was easier to kill those little young bucks than a doe so I started setting my sights higher than that. If I want meat then there is plenty of does out there to be kilt. Again, I'm not looking down my nose but I still think it's silly.

There was some looking down going on for sure. I don't care about the management talk. I don't like somebody downplaying somebody else's trophy because they don't see it as one.

Has summed it up, killing small young bucks really does no good. It is a mindset just to say you killed a buck. I don't talk down to anyone on this board, and if someone posts a pic of a young small buck that they are proud of good for them, you wont see me in that thread talking down to them, I don't have a problem with people hunting within the law. I just don't see purpose for hunters who have been hunting there whole lives to kill young bucks year end and year out, and at the end of the hunt sit around the fire and make excuses about why they killed or talk about how they never see good deer. No one hunts because they have to put food on the table anymore.

You're allowed to kill two in one day?

Downshift gets it. I am not a kill it all type hunter, as evidenced by my 1 lifetime buck. My point was simply that if a person is proud of what they've killed, don't piss on their parade. If my daughter and I kill a smaller deer, it's going to be just as much a trophy (because of the experience with her) to us, as any "mature buck".
Again, I was simply trying to say that anything can be something to be proud of, and you shouldn't blast somebody for it.

young kids are a different story. we try to only shoot mature bucks at our place but kids get a pass. first buck, basket rack 8? blast away and we'll be celebrating.

We aren't even on the same page, you are talking about hunting with your kids. Most of us have kids we understand what it means to hunt with kids nobody is knocking you for wanting to killing a deer that may or not be mature when and if y'all hunt together.

But at the end of the day the success of you and your daughters hunts will have very little to do with if you pull the trigger or not. The shooting and killing is just a bonus to me when it comes to spending time in the woods with my kids.

In Ohio, as long as you call in the first kill and tag it with the permanent tag, you can kill another. You can't kill two together, but you can kill as many as you want in a day as long as the permanent tag is on with the correct number on it before shooting another. I only bought two tags, so that's all I could kill. I now have two additional tags and will be going back for the final two day season the middle of this month. Will try to take a couple more of these horses..haha.
