Hope he has great health insurance. That bill will be expensive.

He’s a YT influencer and young. I’ll bet his insurance situation is lacking.

They don't rattle as much as they used to. It alerts hogs to their presence.

He did have an allergic reaction to the bite, probably due to previous bites by a Trans-Pecos copperhead and a pygmy rattler (for which he had around 12 vials of antivenin). Felt his airway closing on the way to the fire station. They hit him with epinephrine on the helicopter ride.

He's fortunate. That's what killed Dingo.

I think it would behoove herpers who regularly hunt to obtain the proper permits and stock up on antivenom. Domestics/natives aren't going to cost you like the exotic keepers who have to really shell out the money for a few vials. With the growing interest in the herping hobby and venomous keeping, I wouldn't be surprised if it starts to stress the supply of antivenom. Venom1 cutting back has already become a problem, and it has lead to zoos and other keepers tightening down on their own supply. Then, the medical research side steadily growing and sucking up supply has to be accounted for.

Maybe herp clubs/groups can pool their funds in effort to fund and stock their own supplies.

It was my friend in Florida who got bit. I just drove over there to visit him in the MICU the past couple days. He’s on day 15 in the hospital but was at least downgraded to the intermediate care unit then a regular room while I was in Florida. Still major issues with the leg and foot though so he’s not out of the woods yet.

Would he happen to be allergic to wasps and bee stings or anything like that? I’m pretty allergic to wasps and bee stings, and have always wondered if I’d also be allergic to venomous snake bites, or have a reaction to anti-venom. Didn’t know if there was some correlation with venoms.

I don’t handle snakes anymore, especially a venomous one, but as a kid, I’d go after every single snake I saw, and was obsessed with them. I’d even catch Cottonmouths, Copperheads, and black widow spiders. Now that I’m older, I think back to those days, and think about how stupid and dangerous that was to do. I’m honestly very fortunate nothing ever happened to me. But I do wonder now, how my body would have reacted to snake venom.

I don’t think he is - I think an allergy develops in some people after previous exposure to antivenin. He had a bite a couple years ago and had 12 vials of antivenin, then earlier this year a bite from a Trans-Pecos copperhead, for which he only took benadryl (hand was very swollen for about 36 hours then subsided).

I was not even aware that previous antivenin treatment could provoke an allergic reaction upon future envenomation until the popular snake youtuber Dingo died from anaphylactic shock following a bite earlier this year.

I'm not one for asking hunting spots, but please share so I don't go there lol.
I didn't go NYE because of the heat. I would rather my dogs and myself not run into any. I know the chances are slim, but still don't want to risk it.

Whats that? like 100million dollars?

Several years back 1 vial of anti venom cost me $1,575 (just the vial) Our outside Tom (Norman- was physco kitten, hence name...he turned into a badass ) he got bitten on his front foot by a juvenile copperhead. he killed it and brought it's half eaten body to the house. He really didn't need the anti venom, leg was swollen an hour later and the bite was barely bleeding but I was out voted and it was a $2500 trip to the vet

88 vials @ $1575 is $138,400 but I have to believe it would be more expensive now, plus human vs animal AV .

I'd guess $2500 per vial = $220k for just the AV. Probably another $7500 per treatment for Dr., Nurses, etc. At $10k per $880k .. now add what $25k per day for hospital room and basic care.

Well over a $1mil snake bite

That would be my guess too.

They finally sent him home today on day 16 - 13 of that in MICU. Even walking with a walker is an excruciating struggle right now - he has lots of PT ahead.

but I suspect there is no way the insurance company is going to pay that out if you die handling snakes.

I take it you’ve never dealt with insurance companies. I meant no disrespect to the OP.

I’m surprised at how broad the coverage was - on my first visit he had an interview with a local news station. A couple days later it was on Daily Mail, Newsweek, NY Post, and on my last visit CNN was interviewing him.

I’m thankful they took care of your wife and I’m sorry for your loss.

It seems you are in-house counsel for an insurance company, or something similar, and that you’ve seen these companies work fairly with clients. I’m a private practice physician who holds a very negative opinion of the entire insurance industry, as a whole. Different context, I know, but it leads me to think they would fight paying out a million for a snake handler due to some legal clause or exclusion.

Anyway, I’ve hijacked this thread enough. Happy New Year
