My dog, Hank (black lab), has been diagnosed with arthritis. The main problem area is in his lower spine, and he can hardly put any pressure on his right hind leg. The doc says there's nothing they can do for him. They gave me a 10 day supply of steroids, and I've been giving him a glucose supplement for several months now plus a prescription for it for the past two months. Has anyone else had to deal with this with their dogs? Any suggestions? He lays around a lot, and I know when I do that I get real stiff and sore in my lower back. Other than some moderate exercise for him, what else can I do? TIA

Eta

Inlaws have a Rott/Lab mix that has arthritis pretty bad, primarily in her lower spine/hip. She also just lays around a lot and its tough for her to get up at times. Some days it's like she doesn't have it and is running around like normal but other days she's limping pretty hard. One thing that seems to help on her bad days is if I rub her hip for a few minutes. I usually just make a fist and make a circular motion letting my knuckles dig in a little. It gets blood flowing to the area and seems to provide temporary relief.

Yeah I've done something similar. I guess it's wishful thinking, but I was hoping maybe someone on here might know of a supplement or something of the sort that could help.

My parents had a shepard/mutt that had arthritis, and if I'm not mistaken they gave him baby asprin. Seemed to help out a lot. Might want to run it by your vet.

Glucosamine is the only thing I know of that helps.

My vet usually gives a small pain killer like tramadol and another one but it slips my mind at the moment. Call your vet and ask for the tramadol....I know a few people who have poodles that have some sort of spine arthritis and this is what they give them. It wont take it away, but it will make them more comfortable.

Thanks for the tips, gentlemen. It just tears me up to see my boy not being able to jump in the truck anymore. I've been having to pick him up to get him in and out...

i had a schnauzer that had arthritis in hind legs. Brought her to vet and he put her on rimadyl. She immediately (like 15 minutes)improved. Ask your vet about it. Wish you the best.

there was a story on one of the prime time national news shows the other day about stem cell research and curing dog arthritis. the reason i remember is because it made me think of my 12-13 year old boxer. it was expensive as all hell (~$10k), but they say it almost completely relieved the symptoms. well, at least leaps and bounds better. i think i remember you posting about just getting a job not to long ago so it may be out of the question, but you could look into at the least. there was a whole variety of solutions that were discussed. one of them was a partially submerged treadmill that caused less stress on the joints. good luck

I have a 12 year old Chow/lab. He has these problems. The best that I was able to do for him was put him on Science diet arthritts dog food. Made a very big difference. If I take him off for a week, he will just lay around. With the science diet dog food, he is keeping up with my 4 year old lab. They it the woods everyday to hunt.

Oh, my daughter is a Vet and yes, she is the one that told me to put him on this dog food.

Yeah I'm no OT baller by any stretch, but I'm going to do whatever I can to help him. He's like a kid to me. Thanks for the info.
