It was raining real hard and my neighbor was running between my house and his and went in-between the truck and car and caught his shin at full speed. He just laid on the driveway in pain in the rain for a few minutes. We laughed and had a cold beer and towel ready for him when he made it to the porch.

I treat them like rattlesnakes. Give them a wide berth and point them out to others.

to be fair, its actually more dangerous to you the driver to leave them on. Those things are directly mounted to the frame so in the case that you get hit hard in the back all that energy is transferred to you. Yes your truck gets less damage to it, but the safety parts of the car arent able to crumple and do their jobs, and you catch the brunt of it

All these stories have made my shins hurt in sympathy.

I’ll never take mine out. Saved me when being rear ended. Hitch went into their bumper and radiator. No issues as to it was a longer than normal hitch. Plus tow way to often.

Every time I get a different truck I end up hitting my shin once before I think damn it my hitch is on this truck just like my last.
It only takes a few times before it’s ingrained in your brain look for a hitch

My son stepped on a bow rake in the shop when he was about 14 or 15. He thinks it knocked him out for a few seconds. Then he made the mistake of telling us about it later. In my mind, it played out like something in a Warner Brothers cartoon.
His theme song has been AC/DC's Hell's Bells ever since.

I am so gun shy I dont walk close behind any vehicle! Its like the rule about not walking behind a horse so you dont get kicked!
