Having a special season for primitive weapons used to actually mean something. Traditions has released something called the NitoFire, the first muzzleloader to use Firestick sealed powder charges by federal. Federal says it is a faster, safer, more precise way to load and unload a muzzleloader. Almost sounds like a shotgun slug. I mean it is a cool idea but seems like it is getting a way from the spirit of having an early season for primitive weapons.

Primitive weapons season went way out of control a long time ago.

When the .35 Whelan was approved for "primitive weapon" it made muzzle loaders a thing of the past in Louisiana

There was really nothing primitive about the inline muzzleloader with a scope on it. I had .45 Thompson Center. Killed a doe at 185 yards with it. Only down side was cleaning the sucker after shooting it. Accurate as any rifle.

I ‘member the good ol days at tensas when no scopes were allowed and only muzzle loaders. If you could get it to hit a pie plate at 50 you called it good. Right after dark you would hear a bunch of shots of people clearing their guns Had my gun hesitate before going off once on a deer. I flinched like hell and I bet I shot 20 feet over the deer

I'd like to see primitive weapons season go back to what it was when I started hunting.
Real muzzleloaders without scopes.

I noticed this board appears to dislike muzzleloaders for some reason. Can't figure out what the hate is about.

Maybe because they're not muzzleloaders anymore. They're large caliber, single shot, breach loading rifles

During Louisiana Muzzleloader Hunting Season, Legal Primitive Firearms for Special Primitive Firearms Season include: rifles or pistols, .44 caliber minimum, or shotguns 10 gauge or smaller, all of which must load exclusively from the muzzle or cap and ball cylinder, use black powder or approved substitute only, take ball or bullet projectile only, including saboted bullets, including primitive firearms known as in line primitive firearms, and Single shot, breech loading rifles, .35 caliber or larger, having an exposed hammer that use metallic cartridges loaded either with black powder or modern smokeless powder. All of the above may be fitted with magnified scopes.

My muzzleloader is a .54 Thompson Center Renegade I built from a kit my dad got from TC like 40 years ago. Powder only, huge Maxi-hunter lead conicals. Open horn sights. Kills deer dead.

No. Everyone seems to unanimously love the 35 whelen rifles. I’m talking about every time someone brings up actual muzzleloaders, it seems like people get pissy towards them.

It has nothing to do with primitive any more for one simple reason.
Cull the herd. In many places too many deer. So, they are making it easier and easier. No care for the tradition or old ways.
The insurance companies push hard to keep the harvest numbers up to reduce claims.
With a bow, the long bow guys bitch about recurve, the recurve bitch about compound, and compound guys bitch about crossbows.
I just don’t worry about it any more. Just use what makes me happy. Just because somebody else uses a more modern method, he doesn’t kill “my” deer. So just let it go

Actually, it's about hunter recruitment. We are losing hunters every year, every generation. That's why they're making it more accessible. Breach loaders, crossbows, etc. In order to eliminate as many barriers to access as they can. And slow the rate of decline.

The only way we are going to "save" hunting is by creating much greater access through more public hunting ground. I'm talking millions and millions of additional public hunting acres. So that working people can afford to have a good experience in the woods.

Once it becomes seen as an elite sport. Or the past time of the 1 percenters, then it will fall off a cliff.

So why not just have “deer season”? Once it opens shoot as many as you like with whatever you like?

By the way I’m all for shooting lots of deer. I hunt them all year round and it has not had an effect on crop damage in my area.

If they opened deer season year round with no limit deer would still be overpopulated. Maybe more so, people would get their fill of shooting deer pretty quick if they could shoot one at any time.
