I ran into two different hens this weekend with a clutch of poults. That means they were bred over a month ago, or late March. Hens aren't responding or going to gobblers if they're sitting on nests. Toms figure this out pretty quickly, so they get educated and quit responding to hen calls making the last couple of weeks of turkey season useless. If you don't get your birds the first couple of weeks, you might be SOL. That sucks for any parent dealing with baseball, or Easter holidays too. You can only hunt when you can, and hunting late season sucks now. The few turkeys still gobbling are only gobbling early morning, because it's just a cool morning. Then they shut up the rest of the day. Make turkey season great again and open mid-March like it used to be.

Early to mid March is when I had a lot of turkeys on camera. Not much since then. Did get my nephew on one for youth season but I have not had any luck yet. Heard plenty gobble but not really responding to calls.

That’s the point, to have the season later and have hunting interfering with breeding less.

we have poults on the ground in SW Alabama as well
for AL i’d prefer them
to go back to march 15- april 30

i’d also be okay with dropping limit to 3 like Georgia

Perfect. Leave the season alone for 3 or 4 more years. That's how you

You need birds in order to do that.

Peak nest initiation is the first week of April. It’s a bell curve. Those you saw were outliers.

Good to hear though

Simply not true

If you leave at 8 am you can’t hear them

They are still gobbling. Will still be gobbling in May as well. Been gobbling since January

The season has been going into late April for a long time even before the season change

I remember when we had zones that opened at different times Jackson bineville didn’t open until April and no one complained then

Give me an April turkey any day. A henned up March turkey is frustrating

Walking all day and not hearing anything is pretty frustrating too, and you can't call to them because they're pretty educated by now. At least a henned up March turkey gives you something to locate, and gives you hope of a mid-day/afternoon success after he splits away from the hens.

I understand why the season was moved back, and I know it's good for the population in the long run. I can still vent a little due to the late turkey season blues. Have pitty on a soar footed old turkey hunter.

I understand.

2021 was a pretty crap poult production year in La so there are much fewer loud mouth 2 year olds running around this year. I imagine barbest rates will be pretty low this year. Have seen quite a few jakes so next year should be decent

Hoping for a good hatch this year

And that was the plan back in the mid 2000’s. It’s working great.

The 06 Washington Parish rocket net study spilled the beans.

Do what? How did you decipher this from saying I couldn't hunt the first couple of weekends? Opening weekend at Easter is rough for anyone. That's usually time to spend with family and go to church, not chase long beards. I couldn't even hunt youth weekend due to my son's 4-H shooting competition.

I can’t speak for Louisiana but I wish Mississippi would go to April first start for everybody. Go back to tags and you get one. If you get caught without tag come with thousands in fines.

Man to me the season is doing just what it should be at this time. Typically the last two weeks the hens have left the gobblers for the most point and they are vocal and killable however many have given up due to the long season.

This past weekend my 13 year old son and I have two of the best days of turkey hunting I have had in my 38 years of turkey hunting. We left the house at 5 am made the 2.5 hour drive to our lease in SW MS and got on a bird gobbling when we stepped out the truck at our camp at 745. Hunted gobbling turkeys until lunch time and worked on chores around the lease and got on another bird gobbling at 4 pm. Sunday morning we hunted gobbling turkeys until we had to hop in the tractor to do some work at 11 am we heard 10 different birds.

If you had a bad hunt I hate to hear that but for me the last two weeks have been every bit as good as what I hope for I hope next weekend is just as good I may even bring my gun if so.

Mississippi has required tagging birds for at least the last few years.

Pushing the season back would help the birds, as well as help limit pressure from out of state hunters without an open season, but I love being able to start middle of the week in the middle of March!
