River would also make the most sense on why they haven't found bodies as of yet. Could have carried them a good distance, and also throws off the dogs.

Hunters were found, unfortunately deceased.

A simple GPS will save lives.......I carry mine religiously out West....

That’s a tough one, but wasn’t looking good. At least the family knows.
Things can get Western in a hurry in the Rockies. All of us have made a mistake or two in the outdoors. Just dumb luck that you don’t have to pay the full price for it.
RIP, boys. Elk hunting is a grand game.

Not much reason for GPS anymore. OnX app and backup battery for cell phone works better. And always a compass when all else fails.

Terrible.
That was likely always going to be how they were found, but still terrible for them and their families.
I"m curious where they were found. I have to think they froze to death overnight in the rain. Just curious what kept them from making it back to the truck before nightfall.
I've had so many people call me today asking if I was alive b/c of this story.

It is highly unlikely they didnt' have GPS. You use it on your phone through OnX or Gaia, keeping your phone in airplane mode. I went from Sunday to Thursday without charging my phone once leaving it in airplane mode and using my Gaia app as a GPS daily.
They either lost their phone, phone died, or something happened to them that prevented them from walking out.
and the new satellite function on the iphones worked great on the mountain. You can send messages to anyone from anywhere now. And these boys had InReach on them as well. They had plenty of ways of communicating and using GPS while they were out there.

Yeah was talking about it today, I’m heading to Montana in November and a buddy is going to NM.
Not knowing the details yet but just speculating how you don’t get the 2nd chances you may get hunting a 200ac lease in sw miss or La when you are at 10k feet miles from a trail in rugged terrain.

I've been badly hypothermic and hypoxic at the same time before and I was pretty whacked out. Definitely not able to make any good decisions.

Sad situation. I was hoping for the best, but knew the outcome was grim. Never been hunting in the rockies but I have hunted a lot of states. Mother nature doesn't care unfortunately.

Yeah It sucks, I have only hunted out there a couple times but fell in love with it, going to Montana in November. No doubt I think everyone knew the outcome this many days out but being only 2 miles from the trailhead is saddening but at the same time just reinforces how far two miles can be out there.

Maybe one of them got hurt? Slowed the other down? Very odd they wouldn’t message out, as said could have been a dead phone but you’d think something would have had battery.
Damn terrible

Hard to say. Two really fit guys only 2 miles away from the truck means something bad likely happened. River, rokslide, something like that.
I'm sure we'll get the details in short order.

Don't even know these guys but I'm definitely a little upset. Heart hurts for them and their families. We all do this because we absolutely love the outdoors and I'll be honest I never think about the consequences.

Are there grizzlies around that area?

Yeah I was paying more attention to it since they were missing and the anticipation of them being found than I would have if it had only been just them getting killed on the mountain.
Not being callous at all but like I told my buddies in a group chat there was a pile of people who died today just doing everyday things and but they don’t make the news because it’s not climatic.
At least they died living life doing the things most people can only dream of.
RIP ol boys

Yeah you right. I work in the medical field so death is nothing to me. People dying doing what I love to do hits me harder I guess. Terrible situation regardless.
