If you you read our last couple post we have buried the hatchet. I do not see anymore BS from either one of us. We both feel very passionate about veiws & things like this happen. Usually its over a whiskey drink & not the OB. I have respect for him & will probably disagree with him in the future. But neither will get personal or air it on the OB.

I am humbled & appreciate this platform to discuss the rise.

I know it has been speculated on here and on other boards, but are there any official studies or concerns about the levees on the lower Mississippi or the spillway levees (baton rouge and south) due to the really saturated ground we have now?

It seems to me that until this weather pattern breaks, we will see continued rain events in the Midwest and a continuation of the extremely wet weather well into spring.

I would think that this situation would cause a long duration flood on the river and place an extreme amount of pressure on the already soft levees.
Any input from knowledgeable folks would be greatly appreciated

There recently has been some lobbing in Baton Rouge for new survives. Most of the survives of the rivers in use are 80 years old. There has also been meetings with the Comps to get a joint effort. It has been falling on deaf ears though. It will take the public getting envolved & behind it to get anything done. The Corps & levees are extremely under funded.

In my opinion everything outside the levees don't have much to worry about. That can always change with a 12 inch blanket of rain over the valley that drains into the Mississippi over 4/5 states. I like absolutes & right now our levee & damn systems is not an absolute.

Build the levees to twice thier size. Then keyhole concrete them. & that point it is done & over with. No more worries. It will that the publics backing to help the Corp to get it done. Everyone's insurance would go down at that point also.

MORGANZA, LA (WAFB) - The Morganza Spillway will not open before Wednesday, January 13, according to a spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers Friday evening.

The change to the Morganza timeline is the result of a new river forecast suggesting that the two triggers for opening the gates will be met on January 13, a day later than anticipated when a timeline was announced Thursday.

I speak on that in the video. Just in extreme redneck dialect. The posters on here that don't like me will probably get a laugh in.

So another major flood event flush with sediment and we are still studying it? This is just another wasted opportunity to gain any real benefit from events such as this one. These sediment transport studies are getting to be as bad as the Baton Rouge Loop studies.

Its more data to help calibrate the models and see if past efforts are being effective as opposed to "Hey lets see what will work"

To be honest I am not all that familier with the Black River. I see it is predicted to crest at 48.5ft on Jan 18. The Red at Alexandria will crest on the 13th and Little River at Rochelle will crest that same day.

So given the Morganza is below these rivers obviously it will not add additional flow to these rivers. So its a question of backwater. I don't think you will see a backwater effect from Morganza that far up. In 2011 the Old River Control structure created backwater in the Red but the Red was much lower in 2011. Since the Red is higher this year they will send less water down the outfall channel.

So to answer your question given the situation I just described I don't think it will effect the crest at Amce. But don't take that as gospel.

Hope this helps.

Big eagles. They been nesting in the fore bay around 9 or 10 years now. Another pair nest in the river bend on the east side of the fore bay.

Here is a link to our gage we install on the for bay side of the structure earlier in the week. You can see when it overtopped to potato levee and now the steady rise.

Believe top of structure is about 65 ft and they opened Morganza last tile at 62ft

So how many more 100 year floods do we need to calibrate a diversion? We have 2 in operation, 1 of which was accumulating sediment before they redisgned it. Build the diversions. If they don't work then the engineer in charge can blame the contractor or the data supplier, in this case you. I can just see the Mexican standoff between two engineers now.
