"Mentally Unstable" is a slippery slope...

Although I agree that someone with a very powerful, mind-altering illness may not need to own a firearm, this is a VERY slippery slope. In California now, even the slightest hint of depression or anxiety can bring police knocking.

Every compromise is a lubricant to the slope. Don't give shite.

"Disagreeing with me" will become the same as "mentally unstable"

what will end up happening from that type of bullshat is that people that could get back on the right path with a couple of months of anti-depression meds will be afraid to be alienated and never be able to hunt or have a gun again in their life.....So they wont get help and that will magnify the problem 10Xs now they dont get the simple treatment that would help.
So many of these stupid arse brain fart ideas put out by these commi phucks are so obviously tainted and wrong....but yet they still push forward with jamming them down the public's throat as "it a great idea! Keep guns out of the mentally challenged" Yeh no shat! But who is defining "mentally challenged"...
That one got me a little worked up...gonna have to take another anti-depressant tonight
I kid, I kid...

It's all a slippery slope, but doesn't mean we shouldn't explore the detriment to society the democrats caused back in the 70s by removing federal funding for mental hospitals. I'm libertarian on most things, but the private sector has failed society in this area.

VERY worrisome.....Certainly, no one wants anyone having guns who is not mentally stable to have guns, but HOW does one define that? How does one protect society as a whole w/o being overly punitive to someone who's not even committed a crime? I'll admit I don't know the answers.
I found this quote from the linked article interesting:
"A felony conviction or restraining order is flagged as a 'disqualifying event' in California’s database, but it isn’t sufficient evidence to obtain a search warrant."
In other words, all the "suspect" has to do to avoid confiscation of their gun(s) is to NOT allow the Justice agents into their house....

"California is the only state that takes legally obtained weapons away from citizens who are no longer supposed to have them."
My brother-in-law had his .22 rifle taken from him in Arizona when he and his Euro-trash wife had a "mutual combatant" domestic violence event (she was hitting him and he held her down until LE arrived).
I don't know if he ever got it back.

I am pretty certain I would be considered mentally unstable. Wouldn't stop me from owning or having a proxy buyer get me a gun that I wanted.
With the "mentally unstable" qualification, does that mean everyone needs to go see a shrink to determine if they are mentally unstable?

Coastie,
You make a good point. I took the quote in the article to mean that CA is the only state that has a department and agents in place to monitor the ownership of guns and routinely confiscate guns from those who shouldn't own them. I imagine that other states who remove the guns do so only when circumstance have brought it to their attention.

What will happen, probably within 5-6 years, is being a Christian will be something that will be federally mandated as mentally unstable.

I see what you mean. Sounds right.

Thanks for all the responses guys!
This quote is exactly why I don't like the "mentally unstable" argument. The line has to be drawn in the sand and it has to be drawn by a human. People are not infallible beings. Why does someone get to decide what to impose on someone else? That's what I see as being so slippery.

Here Is A thought. When I was in college a prof had the entire class take a competency test. There were 3 different ones floating around to make it harder to "cheat" . 90% failed. Unless we were all crazy I'd say there is a lot that needs to be done for this labeling system
