I am not surprised they completely disregarded the tarpon fishermen.

There hasn't been a tarpon caught/seen in that area since the pogy boats did this.

For those that don't know--tarpon stage on very select areas of the coast; as in there are 5-6 places to catch/see tarpon between Cat and Grand Isle (albeit some are caught here and there as the Tarpon are transitioning). The tarpon stage in these spots to feed on storm minnow and pogys.

Same thing happened in Cameron. We used to catch tarpon here until the pogey boats pushed them and their migrating patterns far offshore. They are still migrating between catch zones of Galveston and Grand Isle, but now remain permanently way offshore thanks to years of pogey boats.

That's the fear for us, which is becoming a reality unfortunately.

they were hailed on VHF and informed there was a large number of tarpon feeding on the pogeys. The pogey boat captain responded that they did not see any tarpon and neither did the spotter plane. They proceeded to drop their net boats and encircle the entire pogey school, capturing and kill tarpon as well.

The result can be seen in the photos below posted by one of the tarpon fishermen to Facebook. The tarpon in the net died. They also reported a tarpon ended up on the deck of one of net boats. The fishermen reported seeing several tarpon in the pogey net that were in bad shape, doubtful if they lived or not.

Should have gotten back on the radio and told them to meet you in the parking lot

Shrimp boats are regulated to some extent.

Pogie boats make politicians turn a blind eye regardless of how badly they rape the coast.

maybe a properly equipped sports fisher needs to have a bushel basket of old gang hooks tied together on wire line and fish it in front of the boogie boat for their net

Modern problems require modern solutions.

ETA: fished Grand Isle this past weekend and was wondering if there were any tarpon left down there. This thread sheds light on it for me.

That is just absolutely infuriating. Some of those adult tarpon are 25-30+ years old.

Between the shark issues in FL and now this, Tarpon need every bit of help they can get...Such a waste.

At least tarpon can out wit the sharks to some degree in FL.

In LA they don't stand a chance against the pogie boats.

It is incredibly frustrating especially when you realize the people allowing this wear a suit and tie to work everyday and when they do come down to the coast to fish, it is with money that they get from these pogie companies.

I try not to have despair about it but there is an old saying about LA: "The greatest thing about LA is the people. The worst thing about LA is aso the people"

Been saying it for a while that documenting Redfish kills won’t really push the pogie fight, but when Tarpon kills start getting documented then it brings way more out of state and national attention. Tarpon are migratory which will bring more Federal pressure. This is the same area where there have been prior dead floating Tarpon from Pogie bycatch documented previously as well. People view redfish as a dime a dozen but when word and documentation of wasted Tarpon, a prized sporting fish, start spreading it’s going to move the needle

We can only hope.

It will be a challenge because i know damn well those companies have a good legal team and factor that in with arguably the most corrupt politicians in the country.

Florida and organizations for Tarpon conservancy will push this. Trump has already threatened the pogie fishery owners as they are multi-national/Canadian. Why wouldn’t Ron DeSantis go to Trump and say “Here’s your ammo” and then lean on Landry to actually do something to keep in good graces. Not saying that this happens but I could see an opportunity for it playing out like this (maybe a bit of fantasy on my end)

Got this email earlier, looks like it’s a petition to send to Trump, I didn’t open it

quote:

We are asking for all staff (and your families), vendors, and partners to sign the petition below in support of the Menhaden Industry. This petition will ask regulators to defend and protect the Menhaden Industry against various campaigns which misrepresent the science behind our industry.

Wishful thinking man. If Landry does that its political suicide for him.

What if Trump presses him and he rebuffs Trump? Will that go any better for Landry?
