My brother is 38 going on 70, a mid aged/modern Elmer Fudd.
He is waging war against sparrows in his backyard that intrude on the martins.
He has created a subculture on the facebook page he is part of, with old men PMing him pics of their sparrow kills.

They make for a good time hanging out with pow pow. We'll sit on the swing and drink a few beers. He calls them suicide bombers because they know they're going to die going to that birdhouse.

Trap and shoot S&S. Starlings will compete with and actually kill purple martins with their long hard beak. Sparrows can and will break eggs and kill young hatched purple martins. They must be controlled

Perfect example of invasive species and how they spread. They were not present in the U.S. Until 1890 when a jackass released 100 in Central Park in New York.
Assuming we are talking about starlings

He says they have gotten wise and scatter as soon as he opens the back door with the pellet gun.
Thinking of sitting in a pop up blind one afternoon for a covert mission

It's WW111 every year with those damn house sparrows. I hate them.. .22 Benjamin and bread is my weapons of choice

A Sparrow trap is the way to go. Although, it is fun shooting sparrows with a pellet gun.

you can make a fine pie with yard birds... or put the breasts on a treble hook for fish or hung high for critters

Put those half moon access holes on that are starling resistant.

My grandfather would sit on his patio, drink beer, and kill starlings with his Benjamin for hours. He had 6 purple martin houses and they got defended pretty well.
