Have y’all looked into a pellet plant for the sawdust? They are starting to show up across SETX

We sell our residuals to a pellet mill. They're only about 12 miles down the road. We're not big enough to justify having one of our own.

Do they burn the pellets overseas in large power plants or is it bagged individually for sell to homeowners for heating?

I’ve always wanted to build a small mill to process Chinese tallow wood into pellets. An invasive tree so getting wood would easy and I think it burns hot due to the oils present in the wood

These get shipped to Baton Rouge and exported to England.

The bagged pellets idea would probably work. The electricity is a fairly big deal. It's 100 HP equals One ton per hour. So if you want to do one tractor trailer load of 25 tons per 8.5 hour shift, you would need a 300 hp pellet mill.

300 HP would be about 250 KWh. So if you paid 10c per KWh for your electricity, then you're looking at a bill of about $25 an hour when youve got that sucker turned on.

Now take the welfare out and it would flourish. 2.5% roi doesn’t seem like ballin to me.

Pretty sure he’s talking about subsidies in row crops when he says welfare... Not sure what the 2.5% ROI is.

So for the experts here, when would be a good time for a person who has been through the planning/architectural/ mechanical mess, and has selected a builder, to go ahead and start building? I can wait to get a better lumber price.

Does it trade like oil or gold?

Saw something on CNBC about cost to build a home is up $17K.
I build houses this is accurate.

I build one plan in February and the lumber cost was 14k

I had a couple ask for that same house last week and my lumber quote is at 25k

The timber business and the lumber business are disconnected from a supply demand standpoint. There's way more standing timber out there now than there are mill to process it. So timber prices are low.

I’m guessing this is why no one is willing to buy pine trees like they used to 30 years ago?

With the damage done by hurricanes in Lake Charles and Gulf Coast Alabama the supply and demand will make lumber prices even higher.

Lumber prices !!!!! by meeple
Curious as to what has caused prices to spike?

Spoke to a friend who owns a fence company. He said a lot of treated lumber comes from South America and a lot of those mills are COVID shutdown.
