Now how were the quail numbers?

Wind blew us out one day and looking for the Star ate up a bunch of my time. Other's did continue to hunt, but were short a dog obviously.

Over the 4 days, a couple of coveys were found and a handful of birds were shot.

Not too good, but not a good sample size either. This ranch usually has good numbers but a 2 year drought has drug it down recently. When the drought breaks it'll be back hopefully.

Someone said it earlier in the thread, we've had battery failures and I'm guilty of not turning it on in the past too.

I just never got burned by it until now.

It's always good to learn a lesson that you don't have to pay that much for.

Amen to that

Did you have an e collar as well? Or did she get out of range of that quickly?

Glad you got your dog back.

Wtf man! I was gonna guess you had an English pointer not a setter.
I would be a basket case but my shoe polisher won’t go past 40 yards

I am very glad you got her back.

I have never been around pointers before, so forgive my ignorance. Whenever you are hunting, if you call for your dogs to heel, do they usually come to you or do you always have to track them down. I know she may have been too far to hear you calling her, but do pointers usually heel whenever called?

I get pretty pissed whenever I call my lab and he doesn't listen, but he is always close enough for me to see him. I couldn't imagine if he got out of sight and wouldn't heel whenever called.

Beautiful dog by the way, how is the shedding?

Whoever found your dog needs a nice bottle of something for his deeds. Could of kept it.

Good ones respond to their name, "come" or "here".

Setters are much more willing to please, want to be touched and be a family dog, whereas most pointers just want to hunt and go 90 mph.

She sheds like crazy, but she is not an inside dog. She's very happy in the yard.

She spent the first 1.5-2 years of her life in a real deal dog kennel being grown out and trained by the breeder and a trainer for field trials. When she didn't make the cut, she got sold to us more traditional hunters as what you call a meat dog. She's not polished, but knows how to use her nose and find birds. This issue of having a bigger range and getting out farther was actually trained. We're working with her to hunt a little closer.

For sure. Where we hunt is one of the few remaining places with a healthy population of bob whites. After day 3, I was starting to worry someone picked her up, knew what she was and decided to keep her.

I can’t imagine man.
My Drahthaar has a nose on him that can get him in trouble. Only use a train e collar right now, but will soon be investing in a track and train GPS collar.

Actually began using the e collar after he hit a deer trail and was gone for 15 minutes causing a full blown panic attack. Worst of all, I let him out of the truck after seeing the deer to see if he would pick up the track. He did.

Some years ago, I had a beagle, SoJourn, who came to me because she needed to get out more than she was able to with her family.

Anyway, first few times I took her to our lease, I was scared to death she was going to get lost. She never did. She found her way home every time, and she ranged miles chasing those damned rabbits she hated with a passion.

Molly, though, my blackmouth cur, never ranged far from where I was. One time, we got separated at an intersection, and for a half-hour, she was nowhere to be found. I ditched the four-wheeler for the truck and found her a couple miles down the road, sitting on the side like she had no idea where she was or where I was.

Now, Molly and Murray (damned rattlesnake killed SoJourn, and I'm still looking for that bastard) have GPS collars powered and running at all times, no matter where we are.
