It's a problem for sure.

11 died in 2006, 10 in 2012 and 8 in 2013.

Notably, 2006 didn't even involve a freak storm like 1996 did.

If I was on an 8000m quest, I'd probably climb others before Everest, not because of the objective hazards, but because of the crowds and skill levels of others on Everest.

Arguably that is true on any major peak, but on Everest your chances of dying because other people suck is higher.

Of course, go with a good guide group and the % of major issues drops tremendously. But a lot of that is because they're going to be more conservative, so your chance to go for it may be reduced.

Last stats I saw were 1 in 7 die climbing everest. I assume if you climb it you probably know the stat. I scuba dove hard for 20 yrs and knew of 3 deaths during that time - no comparison on the death rate.
