OB, I’m looking to buy my first bass boat soon. I have a budget of $15-$18k. What should my expectations be in this price range?

I’ve casually looked at Craigslist and Louisiana Sportsman. Any other places to look? I don’t have Facebook, but I could make one if there’s options there too.

Fiberglass or aluminum ?

You’ll probably get newer aluminum with that budget.

Don’t expect to get all bells and whistles

I would do that. Found my new boat there. Sold my last one there.

What area you usually fish. Bass boats can vary big time in price based on how it is equipped etc. I love my bass cat but also appreciate other rigs. LA Sportsman is a great site to find/sell a boat.

dont be afraid to buy one a few years old, that way you will not take such a hit on the depreciation. Try Louisiana sportsman, craigslist, and facebook.

my parents were about to buy a brand new Bass Tracker at Henderson Implements but my brother found an 07 Bass tracker for $9000 and they pulled the trigger on that.

It is a badass little bass boat and really it is all you need for Calcasieu area. It has a 75hp on it and loaded down it will run 40mph.

Just found mine on Facebook marketplace. Mostly individual sellers on there. Within the past week they also expanded their search to 500 miles. Previously it was limited to 100 miles and was a pain to search for boats further out.

Boat trader and such are mostly dealerships. Good thing about buying from an individual is no sales tax on boat/motor. Think of it as you can save a little or get a little more boat.

Don't you have to pay sales tax in Louisiana when you register boat & trailer ?

What does the OB think about Nitros? Specifically ones that are about 10 years old.

This is just my opinion, but if I were to buy a fiberglass bass boat, and wanted to keep it in your price range, I'd look for a ten or twelve year old garage kept Ranger, Nitro, Skeeter, etc. To me, its usually pretty easy to tell if someone babied their boat or beat it up. I have a couple friends who have gone this route, and do not regret it. You just have to be patient, and wait for the right deal. Now, if you go Ranger or Skeeter, you may have to go a little older, but can still find a great deal out there.

If you go aluminum, the possibilities are damn near endless for 15k. Before electronics, of course.

Go aluminum if it’s your first boat. Very forgiving compared to fiberglass and very versatile. Plus you can get much newer equipment. You can always upgrade to glass.

If you are going fiberglass with a 150 to 200 HP engine, it should get to a ten plus year old decent boat of any of the major brands. For instance, four years ago I traded a 10 year old Skeeter 20I in after ten years and got about 24K in trade. With 18K you are approaching that kind of boat. It amazed me how well that bass boat held value after ten years.

Because that was the best riding hull skeeter ever created. Those boats hold there value like a Toyota.
