Great choice if you are concerned about recoil.

If you can handle medium recoil then 270, 308, 30 06 are all great hog/deer guns.

If you are really looking to stay within 600 for rifle and scope, I would go with the ruger american in 7-08 if you can find it. Out a 3x9x40 nikon proataff and you'll have nice setup.

If you can go up just a tad in the budget, tikka it should be. It IS the official OB rifle for a reason.

The Older guys at the camp hunt with .243
One guy hand loads his ammo the others do not.

They swear by the .243 and one of the guys even killed a cow elk with his. They do claim good optics and shot placement is important. But we all know all that.

You need to break up that email so spam bots don't get ahold of it.

I've shot many different calibers but I keep going back to my old .308

I just got a new setup for your price point. Academy had remington 700 woodtech on clearance for $440. Don't know if its still available. Black on Black 700's are $390 all day at academy. Vortex crossfire scope. I got the 6x18 (its my elk gun so I needed my 300 to reach out and touch something). You can pick up a crossfire 3x9 for $120 on amazon I believe. Glass is good and I shoot bullet on bullet at 200 yards with this setup. Go with a .270 if your only hunting white tail. Flatter bullet than a 308. With the Remington 700 you can always upgrade the stock and trigger later but out the box your going to have a great rifle for hunting.
And if your worried about kick throw a $35 limbsaver on it. I can shoot my 300 win mag all day with that.

An 18mm and 9mm objective lens? That's way to small.

The 3x9 comes in a 40mm objective or a 50mm.

3x9 reads as fixed 3x magnification with 9mm objective. 3-9x40 or 3-9x50 would be what your looking for, where the hyphen denotes the range in magnification between the lowest and highest. 3 (to) 9x, not 3 by 9.

sorry, pet peeve

All good. You are correct. I have a bad habit of putting a X instead of a -. If I don't think about it I'll put an X. No idea why lol

I'd talk to this fella, assuming it's a newer FN-made 70?

What are the OB thoughts?

The first link is to the academy homepage.
Never mind its working now. Just depends on how much you want to spend. Both will kill a deer the same. Just the 111 will have some upgraded features. If you can swing it in your budget I'd go with the 111.

That first one, model 11/111 is the exact rifle/scope package I recommended back in August. Get it, change the rings to some Burris Signature rings and you've got a killin machine for years to come.
