I keep a crack barrel 410 at the lake for snakes. I normally tote a pistol when we spend the night there and bring it back home as I don't want to keep anything of real value there. I was thinking about picking up a cheap 12 gauge to replace the crack barrel to use for snakes or 2 leggers and not worry about toting a pistol out there. I have a Mossberg 500 that I really like. Should I be looking at another 500 or is there any real advantage of it over the cheap Mavrick 88. Ive seen several shotguns in that price range. Honestly don't know much about them. Should I be looking at something different like the Savage Stevens in the same price range but with a more tacticool look? Something else?

I bought an H&R 12 gauge for critters and snakes at our camp. I've shot damn near every type of round through that thing. I'm talking about shells that were left in the mud boat from last year, those random shells you find in the junk drawer or behind the seat of the camp truck. It's not jammed yet. I believe I got it for 150 give or take.

Is toting your pistol around that much of an issue?

If you like the 500, get another one. I wouldn't get a crack barrel though if you want it for home defense. You probably want a few more rounds in that instance.

Personally, I wouldn't go cheaper than a Mossberg.

The Mossberg maverick 88 is incredible value for the money.

I have one as a dedicated bike gun.

My brother has the H&R "pardner pump" that I like better than my 870. Not sure it that's what you have though. Granted, I believe my 870 is the newer era of crappy 870s that Remington started shitting out.

Hard to beat a 500 or 870 for inexpensive scattergun.

I played with an 88 yesterday. I can't tell that the difference is between the 88 and 500 except for a plastic v. metal trigger guard and crossbolt safety. I do much prefer the tang safety but I don't know if I prefer it $140 more. The 7+1 88 was $229 and the 7+1 500 was 369. Of course I don't think I need a 7+1 but I've never owned a 7+1 shotgun so I thought it would make it different than my 4+1 500.

They did have a magazine fed AK pattern 12ga at Academy for $399 but I don't know if I've ever seen one of those operate correctly at the range. Also had a Savage and Hatfield 12ga pumps there but I don't know anything about those two and I've never seen anybody with one.

And you won't unless you put some serious money in gun smithing.

They have lower end models that they sell with both a home defense short barrel and a longer hunting barrel.

Or go browse some pawn shops and pick up a cheap 870

No, but sometimes the wife will go up there with the son without me. Or I might stop by coming from the office where I don't carry and pistol instead of driving from home. The FiL and MiL go there quite a bit and it would be there in case they need it too.

Look at the Weatherby PA 459. Really enjoy mine. Ghost ring sights, pic rail, 18.5 barrel, pistol grip.

I've got the 20g. Best feature tho is the screw-in choke. I bought Carlson chokes in rifled slug and turkey.

Look at the Hatfield SAS. I think Walmart has them for $200 in 12 ga.

This.

I borrowed one for a few hunts and it was way better than the old 870 I used to shoot. lighter and way more balanced.

If they are all using it why not go with a youth 20g pump?

You can get em for $300 or less on sale.

The chicks can shoot them effectively.

Damn. Sold out. That's what I get for ignoring my daily PSA emails.

Local Academy had a couple of 20Ga 500's on "clearance" for $224.

Several deals out there if you’re willing to spend up to say $300. But if you really just need something basic Bud’s has a Dickinson XX3B2 12ga Commando home security type shotgun for $135 shipped. I have one, and it’s a solid little gun. For the price you can’t beat it. Recently I’ve seen Stevens for $180, Weatherby for $200, Mossberg 500s for $300. Try gun.deals.
