I've hunted in the woods with this rifle forever. In the woods, knockdown power is more important than range any day. This rifle is light enough to carry while walking, and has all the knockdown power you'll ever need.

My vote is 30-30 only because Ive shot several deer in the woods with one. Had I done that with the 35, I would prob vote for it.

THis is my problem with a traditional "woods rifle". I'm carrying the old dirty thirty because I'm going to hunt a stand that is in the woods with a 75 yard shot, but to get there I walk past a clear cut. Across that clear cut, about 300 yards, the one they call "HIM" is standing there like an animal cracker taking his morning piss. Well, since I chose the ole dirty thirty all I can do is sit there and think about how I much I wish I had my 308/30-06/270/7mm-08.
Now those rounds are just as deadly at 75 yards and come in compact, light rifles (yes, even lever actions if you want, just not very light) and they will destroy "HIM" at three hundy arse well. Why limit yourself?

Thats a good point I would consider from now on. Where I typically hunt though its no such thing as a shot over 75 yrds once I get out of my truck.

Caliber doesn't matter much. Just get a short and light rifle that you don't mind carrying with a low powered scope on it. The biggest thing with a woods rifle is to get one you don't mind carrying. That way, you always have it in your hands, instead of slung up on your shoulder like you do with a ten and half pound 7 Mag with a 26 inch barrel and the Hubble Telescope mounted on top.

There's something about a lever action that just feels right. They carry very well and point very quickly.
You can also fill it up with the leverevolution stuff and stretch the range if you'll ever need a pipeline gun. My argument is always that I can't kill anything at 300 yards any better with a .338 lapua than I can with a .44 mag pistol because I'm probably going to miss anyway. Lots of people think they can make that shot but very few have actually ever pulled the trigger on something that far. I know 100% for a fact that a .35 rem can consistently put deer down at 200+ yards without changing point of aim.
Plus at my place, going in the swamp means you will never see more than 100 yards the entire time you're in the woods

I'm 50% at that distance. Hit a buck, but missed one last year. It's definitely hard to sling one 300yds.

I'd love to have a Ruger M44 Carbine (44 Mag; built just like a 10/22).
I don't think it is nearly the "best" gun, but dammit I think its badass and really want one. I'd love to have one for dog hunting.

You need a new scope.
ETA: A scope that fogs up is defective. If the scope is made by one of the major manufaturers (Burris, Leupopld, Weaver, Nikon, etc) you should be able to get it repaired for minimal/or no fee. Even if it's a minor manufacturer (Simmons, Tasco, BSA), you might still be able to get it repaired for less than a new one would cost. I'd suggest you contact their customer service.

This is what I would do.
No point in going from a 7mm to a .30-06. If you want something easier to whip around, at least get something on a shorter action like a .308, 7mm-08, etc. If I was going that route I'd probably buy a remington model 7 or something.

If it wouldn't be for the whole 10 pounds thing and the $1700 thing, an M1A socom would be a pretty great swamp tromping rifle for mowing down hordes of piggies.
I've never put a better shot on a deer the 2nd time than the first time and a single shot would have never costed me a single deer (assuming I did a good job of tracking it). A handi-rifle in .44 mag with a 2-7 scope would be a great up close and personal deer rifle.

To use it during "primitive" season also. And have something a young kid can use.
I'm not a fan of the 45-70's/.444's of this world because I like my shoulder too much.
I do keep forgeting .35 caliber is the cutoff now though.
