I did massive online research a few years ago for an all-around, classic, big-game, bolt-action rifle that resulted in buying a Winchester .270 model 70 Featherweight at Bassproshops for $700. It is a nice rifle, but I only weigh 140 lbs. and the recoil is nasty.

Next question is barrel length...22" or 24"?
Historically a longer barrel length has better accuracy, although that is now debatable, regardless getting that picky with accuracy is a non issue with a deer hunter much less a beginner so I would advise the shorter barrel length as it is much easier to maneuver in and out of stands, etc

Longer barrels give higher velocity. On some calibers however, there is diminished returns on length (prime example is .300blk). Shorter barrels are more stiff. For a gun used purely for huntung, I would go shorter.

Lifetime ban bet says that I outshoot you at whatever range you pick with my set up. I don't even need to know what you shoot.

I mean, sure, but how does that have anything to do with the quality of NEW Remington guns? Plenty of them can shoot small groups but many can't. Also, the finishes rust on the new ones much easier. There is a huge lack in QC for that company. That is all I am saying.

That I can't speak for. Mines 15 years old and it shoots darts if you shoot enough to really learn it. I have it dialed in with the BDC reticule on that scope and have a super tight group at 475 yards. Ran out of room to shoot after that. It took me a long time to get it there but if someone has patience enough to practice and fine tune it, then it'll keep up with anything out there. Maybe I got lucky with the gun, but I can't knock it.

I was not talking about you then...I am speaking of guns 2007 and later.

Missed your original post about it. I get what you're saying now.

Remington 700 or browning
Do not understand the Tikka love. I guess more that I'm concerned about the Tikka love. The fact people accept such a rifle and recommend it as the "best" option is astounding. 30 years ago a man wouldn't even mention he owned such a rifle, much less bragged about it.

The FN Win Model 70's are nice, dad has a sporter in .30-06 that's a shooter, fine trigger right out of the box. I have an 70 Extreme Weather in .30-06 that took a bit to get dialed in but I figured it out. Nice trigger on the EW as well.

I can agree with this.....mostly. I think the new trend towards cheap rifles has muddied Remington's reputation. Their higher end rifles are still great, but their cheaper rifles leave much to be desired. I am a huge proponent on spending more money and buying something to be proud of , although I do understand financial constraints.

Sako 85 Classic if the kids will keep it forever and appreciate a nice wood stock. Tikka T3 if it is only gonna be used once or twice and get tossed around

There are a few posters here that know a thing or two about scopes. Carson123987 and igchris come to mind first. PM them and name drop yourself

Many years ago decided I wanted a lightweight deer rifle that felt like a .22 shooting squirrels. Got the Remington 700 .270 mountain rifle ( light weight for climbing) with 22' barrel. Great gun . About like shooting a .22. Years later grown son who had several deer rifles borrowed my lightweight .270 and kept it through last hunt with his son, me, LSUballs, Choirboy , 4LSU2, 34Venture and Mallard Master a month before cancer took him. A good lightweight accurate deer rifle for man or kid,.

My dad is finally letting his grip go on his featherweight 270. Hunting with it this weekend

Just saw this article on the Sauer 100 Classic for $700.
Sauer 100 Classic
Apparently only comes in synthetic stock chambered in .308 though.
