Intended usage:
- Ocean Kayaking
- Channel Kayaking

- Slow Rivers

Okay guys, after some research I've developed a short list of kayaks I'm currently looking at (4 of them). Let me know what you guys think:

1. Ascend FS12T (Bass Pro, $549)
LINK

2. Field & Stream Eagle Talon (Dick's, $549)
LINK

3. Perception Sport Pescador (Academy, $499)
LINK

4. West Marine Pompano 120 (West Marine, $549 with no seat)
LINK

Yall have any recommendations/advice on ways to approach choosing a kayak?

1) how comfortable is the seat?
2) can I stand?
3) storage and how easy is the access to that storage

that is probably a good starter kayak, but I wouldn't pay $500 for it

Cant even fit a crate in that tankwell.

If you want to spend $500 get the Perception Pescador 12 from Academy ('09 WS tarpon 120 mold).

ETA: Any kayak will be fine on your explorer. My buddy tops a ride135 on a jeep wrangler daily.

This new yak from BPS looks better for the same price. No experience with it as it is brand new, but it looks really stable and has a better layout in my opinion:

Ascend FS12T

This is not the old Ascend FS12T and looks to have a greatly improved seat as well as other added features.

I have this one and love it!

Mine is red and yellow, but the color never really mattered to me. As long as it wasn't pink or something along those lines.

How much hotter do you think the Olive color is compared to the Sand? Any noticable difference?

Sorry for the hijack I'm excited.

Ok that new FS12T is serious for the price. I knew they axed the old style but didnt know they put it back into production on that platform.

OP, check that new FS12T out. Now modeled the same as the FS128T (maybe Deacon will chime in as he has the 128T).

I'm in a similar boat(see what I did there), looking for a kayak around the $500-$600 range. I've decided that if I can't find anything used that fits in my range then I'll probably go with the Perception boat. Still holding out for a better used boat if I can though.

Absolutely you can stand and fish. The redesign was in part to make a more stable boat. It us much more of a sup-yak hybrid than the previous gen fs12t was.

Call Massey's to see if they have any used boats. I think they sell their demos fairly frequently.

I'll keep that in mind. I hear Pack & Paddle in Lafayette sometimes has deals on demo models as well.

I think the only thing I don't like is the foot holds. I like the molded ones.

Ever used the adjustable ones? I really don't like the molded ones so I suppose it is all a matter of personal preference.

I have, I switch up my foot position often during a trip and it's easier and more comfortable for me to have the molded.

One thing I don't like about mine is the dry hatch up front, PITA to get in there while on the water. This new one looks great, I won't be able to pull the trigger for over a year though. Saving for building a house.

i can stand up and fish no problem, that being said i am only 20 years old and in pretty good shape

great kayak for $500 and was a perfect kayak to begin the sport with
