I'm w/ the other posters here. You can get way more bang for your buck w/ 36k, especially if you check out some used boats. Don't have an opinion on Mako, but other good boats out there for that kind of cash.

2 years ago I picked up an 8 year old 21 ft blazer bay w/ a 150 yamaha 2 stroke for 12,500 that was in very good condition

I agree with everyone in here. We didn't pay a whole lot more than $36,000 for our loaded out Blue Wave Pure Bay 2200.

They're asking $36K...

That seems kind of steep. Have you tried looking at a used boat? I'd look at a Blazer Bay 2170 for that kind of $$$.

To be fair, the boat he's looking at really isn't a bay boat. It's more of a dual purpose rig with deep-V.
More like a small Grady White or Wellcraft.
That's why it is rigged with a 150 on an 18' hull.

I almost bought brand new 22' sea hunt loaded out with electronics, power pole, etc. for $38k. $36k is waaay to much for an 18' IMO.

Ended up going with used as said before can get way more boat for the money. Couldnt swallow loosing at least $10k the second I put a new rig in the water.

For your first boat look around for one 3-5 yrs old. Plenty of them out there with low hours on them. Most of the newer ones have hour meters that a mechanic can hook up to a computer and check. For the fishing you want to do definately get a bay boat. I'm also partial to Yamaha motors FWIW

This is exactly the kind of solid advice I was looking for. I've learned a great deal from this thread. I'll be taking a look at other manufacturers like Nautic Star, Blue Wave, etc. Maybe in the 19' range and will def look into the used market. Already checking out BoatTraders.com. May not pull the trigger for at least another 6 months unless I find a deal that I can't pass up but gathering valuable knowledge in the meantime. Thanks all!

quick question.
Do you need that deep of a hull or is that just what caught your eye?
Here is a $18,995 18' Mako center console with a 90 hp Mercury.

Here is a $36,995 18' Mako with a 150 hp Mercury.

With the budget you have, you can own a top of the line used bay boat. I just bought a used 24' loaded out for a lot less than you are looking at.

I would have bought the 18' Mako if it would have had jump seats. Any boat that came with those was an easier sell to the one who must be obeyed.

That's what caught my eye...as a newbie...but learning now that it is way too much boat for what I want to do with it. The other 18' Mako bay boat you show is probably more in line with my needs. Just want to make sure I don't have any problems if the weather kicks up over Lake Pontchartrain and I'm out a ways. Maybe 19' with a 115HP I'm starting to think.

That's a good size starter boat. If you think you are gonna be in big water like Pontratrain more then I'd seriously recommend you look at the 21 foot boats like the Nautic Star 2110 and Blue Wave Pure Bay. Put a 150 on the back. Will push them just fine and will be alot better ride in rough water.

You would still be within the original budget of the boat in the OP as well.

I'd rather spend way less and get the boat I really need. I just caught wood when I sat in the Mako yesterday and started scheming on how I could pay for it.

bass pro in destin had a 22ft mako with a 200 hp w/ trailer for 30k. Pretty darn good deal. Rod holders out the arse, jump seats, was pretty nice.

That's something to consider. You sound like you've experienced that.

Not so much with Pontratrain. I did a lot of research before I bought my boat. Although it was gonna be my first rig I didn't want to buy something that as soon as I started fishing I realized I went too small.

With all the research and reading I had a lot of people recommend getting a 21 ft boat or larger if the plans were to be using the boat in open water like large lakes, bays, and the gulf. Something about that being the "magic" length where the boat is long enough to stretch from the tops of the crests of the waves. So you go over the top of the chop without porpoising and bouncing inbetween them.

I also didn't want something so big that it would be a pain the arse to trailer and pull or require a heavy duty truck. 21 foot sat just perfect for me. It came down to the 19 and 21 ft boats. I found the 21 ft models had a lot of the features I would have had to pay more and upgrade to get on the 19 fter.

THIS kind of information is invaluable.

And i'm 99% sure they had a 200hp not a 150hp.
