So last year I shot this ammo in my .270 and also in 35 Whelen. After shooting a few deer with them, I’m not sure I’m sold. It’s like a bomb goes off on the inside. Granted the deer I’ve shot have either dropped or walked maybe 20 yards. But when cleaning, if you gut them, it’s a mess.

What’s y’all opinions? I shot Fusions before switching. Debating on going back.

What problems did you have with the Fusion?

Did the Barnes strike bone?

How far are the shots?

Honestly, if you're shooting whitetail out to 300 yards in a conventional caliber, Federal Power Shok (blue box) or Fusion is all you really need or should want.

Honestly didn’t have any problem with the Fusion. Local gun guy was talking up the Barnes so I decided to try them.

Understood. I suspect they cost more than the Fusion or Federal blue box? No knock on your gun shop guy-but some of them spend more time behind a counter or on a range than hunting.

My experience with polymer-tipped bullets on whitetails within 200 yards has not been good. Usually, since they are premium loads, they are loaded a little hotter than cup-and-core bullets and within 200 yards or so they fragment when they enter a deer, rather than mushroom like JSP's. They don't have time to slow down for reliable expansion before burning off some of that speed. This is probably exacerbated since it's an all-copper bullet.

Others may have something else to say about it, but Federal blue box has never let me down. I'd even shoot Remington Core-Lokt's if they grouped better for me. I don't have much experience with Fusions, but I believe they are chemically bonded so that the core and cup don't separate as easily as would happen with-non-bonded bullets.

I've been shooting the Barnes for several years now. 30-06,35 Whelen, and 30-30. No issues for me.

Yea most of my shots are well within 150 yards. I have a good bit of core lokts that I plan on bringing to the range before rifle season.

Barnes aren't ballistic tips. They're solid copper. They shouldn't blow up anything inside. Besides you can eat up to bullet using them. No lead.

Ive used them for 10 years now. Use a light bullet at high velocity.

I switched to Barnes last year and love them and have had great success. They’re very accurate and my kills didn’t go far. I didn’t have the inner damage that you saw either.

They are solid copper. They also have a polymer tip.

Barnes punches a single hole through an animal. The petals stay in tact on the tipped ones. and all you get is a half inch hole through the animal.

I used the Tsx and the petals would break off or the bullet didn't expand and just pencil through. Once I switched to the TTSX. No more problems. Dead deer.

Never could get the barnes vortex to group as well as nosler partitions or fed fusions for my 30-06 and 35W. Those are my "inside 100" guns. So, never shot a deer with them.

I handload. Barnes are extremely accurate. But as for factory ammo, not every gun likes every manufactured bullet. My browning a bolt does not like Winchester ammo, but I could get it to shoot them by handloads.

If they're driven fast they can be pretty violent but most most people have the opposite problem that you are with them. If you are shooting the tipped version, maybe switch to the old school version, it should open a little less violently.

If youre hitting bones and stuff though with either of those calibers its going to cause some nasty shite to happen no matter what bullet you use. .270 shoots light bullets fast which equals destruction. .35 whelen is only a few small steps behind .375 h&h in horsepower and that also equals destruction.

I have a 270wsm. I handload Barnes 110gr to 3500+fps. Clocked it myself.

No destruction. It punches a small hole in them. Like the power of Zeus has struck them down.

A lead bullet would leave much more than a hole. I don't lose an ounce of meat with Barnes. I'll lose it cleaning it and leaving some on the bones.

Shoot the lightest bullet they offer in your caliber. You'll become a believer.

“Bomb goes off inside” is not my experience with Barnes bullets.
I punched a hole all the way through a mule deer. He dropped quickly. I couldn’t find an entry hole.

^^^^^Exactly. I've shot deer in the chest. That bullet will penetrate from front to back. It doesn't break up. It's not meant to. Anyone saying it destroys meat has never shite a Barnes bullet.

Barnes solid copper bullets are the shite. I dropped a bull elk at 396 yards in his tracks with one shot. Went through his shoulder bone and stoned him.

I handload and have used Barnes TSX bullets for many years. My experience has been exactly like the user above who said “like Zeus struck them down”.

You must have hit bone at really close range. My 270 will do that with a polymer tip. I only shoot Hornady Whitetail or Win deer hunter with solid tip when hunting in MS. If i'm shooting on range or trying one past 300 I go with the Hornady Precision hunter, which is a bad arse factory round in my A Bolt.

I’m a fan of Barns as well. Everything has been DRT that I shot with them. I managed to grab some 110gr for my 300blk that I’m looking to try out on a deer or pig.
