If you increase the size limit you will harvest even more females than we harvest now.

Size should be the same or dare I say go to 11" and introduce a slot like redfish have. No reason to keep all the big girls and those little males aren't doing near as much good as even the mid sized girls.

5 fish. 16” or larger. My reasoning: 1. You can’t eat 25 fish. And I can catch my limit every time because I know what I’m doing. 2. We shouldn’t be murdering adolescent 12” fish. I target adults later in their lives once they’ve had their run so to speak.

When you hear me bitching about the lack of trout, lower the limit because you’ll know they’re getting scarce

There are a bunch of issues here.

With changes over time with things like MS River diversions, the trout have moved. Have the test areas that WLF uses to gather base data from changed as well?

What is the kill rate for undersized trout caught? No matter what the MIN is.

Different areas 100% must have different limits.

For the people that say you cannot eat 25 fish…..guess you don’t have much of a family or never fry fish for a ball game?

Just hope the ultimate decision is the right thing and not some political BS.

This is the problem. I hear lots of people saying, “let’s make the rules based on science, not opinion”. Do we really trust the lwfd to do proper studies? Our fishery is constantly changing (introduction of fresh water, erosion, commercial fishing pressure, hurricanes, freezes, more/less predators). I’m not really into anything the government does and I so wish we could form a culture in Louisiana of catch and release. Unfortunately, I don’t see that happening.
I just want my great grandkids to enjoy the fishery I am so passionate about and if that means I have to stop catching after 13 fish pp then so be it (I had plenty of solo days last year I could have filled the boat with 50+ trout).
Why not just try it out for a couple years and see what happens? The fishing after Katrina was on fire and some say that could be because of the decrease in fishing pressure.

This is similar to what I suggested in the survey. Decrease the pressure and the mortality rate, while increasing the number of big breeders by dropping down to a 15 fish limit, 11.5" min size , 20" slot size, no more than 2 over 20".

With all of the camps destroyed due to the hurricane, the fishing pressure will be 1/2 what it was last year.

I also caught more trout this year than ever before. Great size as well.

They can keep it the same until there is an issue with the fish population.

Personal opinion is 15 a person. It’s still plenty of meat.

Was the Redfish population ever in jeopardy at some point in Louisiana’s history? I heard the 80s was a rough period for Redfish, but I was born in 1996, so I’ve never heard of an issue with the Redfish population in my lifetime.

The problem with Louisiana is people feel it’s a bad day if they don’t “fill the box.” This mindset here is so different than other states. People certainly freezer burn their trout way more often than they actually feed 50 fillets to people. Sure someone could keep and cook 100 fish, but 25 is just silly.

I was at Hebert’s on calcasieu lake few weeks ago and a boat was putting in. Started taking to him and he was going shrimping. He was going to start restocking his freezer His freezer had gone out and he lost 500 lbs of shrimp. What the hell do you do with 500 lbs of shrimp.

I have only fished for trout twice in La. this year. Both times, I caught the absolute shite out of 11.78" trout. Over 12? Not so many. Just makes me wonder where the older classes live, and why I have so much trouble catching them.

first, Louisiana doesn’t have many really big trout compared to other states because of the freshwater. But generally people fish the marsh, where most of the juvenile trout are. When the water temperature gets higher and days get longer, most of the bigger trout are moving where the salinity is at least 15ppt to spawn - for example, popular islands near the gulf.

One of these two was at the Chandeleurs.

It can be like that some days out there. You can weed through them and sometimes you will find an area or pocket holding some better class trout, or start fishing deeper water trying to find a ledge or other structure.

Those islands are the most finicky I have found when it comes to condition driven trout fishing. It can be dead or on fire from one hour to the next.

I don’t know where they were then. Obviously no area has as many big trout as they used to for many reasons. Statistically, though, a 20” trout is still a very rare fish.

That did happen. We found water moving though one of the small inside islands. In about 30 minutes, we had 7 fish on(lost 3 at the boat). All 7 were bigger than all the rest of he trout combined from 10 guys over three days

It's not like it used to be. No place is. Still worth it for the adventure. Raw power out there.

Fished Vermilion Bay lately? Why is it even considered an estuary? 90% of trout fishing attempts there suck.
