re: Lafayette Area Fishing (Public Launches, Bayous, and Lakes)

I got a question for you guys, but let me preface with this:
When people are asked about the fishing in Lake Martin, most people's first response is that the grass is too horrible to fish. Now I've fished a few times this year in the Lacassine Pool and in The Burns. Caught plenty of bass at both places. Both places are loaded with grass, but you never hear anyone saying "the grass is too bad in The Pool" or "the grass is too bad in The Burns". I've fished Lake Martin once this year. It was my one and only time going. We did not catch anything, but the grass wasn't the cause of that IMO. I know the fishing in Lake Martin isn't comparable to neither The Pool nor The Burns, but we were able to fish with less "problems" relating to the grass in Lake Martin than we were in The Pool.
So here is my question:
Why does Lake Martin get such a bad wrap for its grass, when similar grass in other places provide for great bass fishing locations?

I didn't the grass too bad when I went earlier this summer. It was almost the perfect amount. You could find some matted grass and some submerged. I am just surprised the fishing isn't better.

I've never fished Lacassine or The Burns, so I don't have any basis to compare them. But to venture a guess on your question, I'd say that it's a small lake that's overfished and poorly managed. That's just my opinion though.
This guy I used to work with back in the day once told me that prior to the mid 90's it was nothing to go to Lake Martin and catch an 8 lber. The grass used to be held in check and the bass fishing was phenomenal. But that's because they used to do regular drawdowns and stocking. But somewhere along the line they decided to stop doing that because it was "messing up the bird migrations". They decided that the rookery was more important than the fishery. It brings them more money from tourists and photographers. But ever since they stopped managing the lake that way, it has never been the same.
That's what I was told. This is not my account of the situation. I wasn't around here back then.

It makes sense; I just wish it was better fishing because its a beautiful place to go, and its right down the road.
Same reason I like 2 oclock bayou. Not so much the fishing, but the scenery is very nice. Although last time I went to 2 O'clock, my gf and I caught about 50 bream, so that was pretty fun

They are both about to close for the year, The Burns this month, and The Pool next month. I'm going to make at least one more trip to the Pool before it closes, try to catch a hamma. There's an area in the pool where motors are not allowed. I bet you could clean up in your kayak. Theres usually kayakers out in the regular pool area, as well. Just watch the wind forecast. A 6mph wind was blowing my little boat up and down that place haha. My trolling motor couldn't keep up with the grass and wind

Yeah I've been wanting to go. Just haven't made the trip yet.
Just keep an eye on the forecast. That shite's always changing.

fish seem few and far between for me. caught one bass last saturday in pelba on a crank bait. put on a brush hog and had a couple of bites. most people there seemed to be bream fishing.

Yeah, the bream and perch seem to be on fire. I'm going Thursday afternoon with a buddy. Probably going to bring some shiners in case the bass bite is too slow. Maybe worms or crickets as well.

Went this morning. Launched at indian bayou and fished the fourdoche area. Ended up with 28 bream, goggleye, and chinkapin. Didn't catch many that werent fillet size. Used crickets. I caught a goggle eye that had to have weight 2 pounds. I lost my grip on it throwing him in to the ice chest and he made it back in to the water.

That would've put you close to the state record. Better get a better grip on him next time.

My weight estimate was probably wrong in that case. It was a tank.

Anybody hear of anything good going on anywhere? My brother wants to fish the morning. Thanks.

PSA for all the Lafayette area folks. Walmart in Broussard off of St Nazaire has a big clearance sale going on in the lawn and garden section. They have a bunch of fishing gear in there. A lot of baits. Especially a lot of saltwater baits.
Here's a few things I picked up just now.
I also got quite a few soft plastics.

I don't saltwater fish a lot, but I even bought a couple of gold spoons for $2 a piece.

I may check that out today. Thank you.
