But regardless, that is an insanely scary situation for both of them to be in. Obviously this dude had a death wish. Glad the good guys came out okay.
A legal armed citizen in one of those cars could've definitely helped. But then again, in this specific instance, the time between him opening fire and being put on the pavement is a very small window. It may have not been enough time.

I may be in the minority here, but if you come up on a police shootout, your best bet is to clear the are. Pulling a gun and firing only makes you a threat in the LEO's eyes, whether you are or not and you may end up getting shot.
Obviously if you see a cop or other person ducked behind a car door getting their arse handed to them, then that's different, but I think in a case like this, its best to vacate the area.
