That should be pretty easy to do for a puppy, not sure what a trained dog cost though.

ETA: I got my labradoodle from a place in Amite called puppies in Louisiana. I don’t have any complaints and the guy also sell labs.

Most Field trial dogs were raised in the house and come in when they are back home in the off season. Any dog raised and socialized in the home is smarter and more tractable than one who only lives out in the kennel. Plan to travel, don't get caught up in the gotta have it today mentality. You can get a good gundog for under 5k. Will do just about anything the average hunter wants(Forced, Steady for marks, simple land and water blinds). Make sure to spend some time watching the dog train/work and understand its abilities and temperament before purchase. There are alot of good ones out there, but also alot of junk. Just have to take your time and do a thorough search. RetrieverTraining Forum, hunting lab pedigree, and entry express all have classified pages.

Don't do this, over priced mutts from a "c" level breeder and trainer. Wild Irish Rose is a marketing scheme for the gullible "Gentlemen Hunters"

Buy a puppy, there’s nothing like establishing the bond early on. Spend about $1000 for the pup, which should get you a solid blood line. Come back here at around 5-6 months and find you a reputable trainer in your area.

In that 5-6 month time period you can/should teach your dog a handful of easy commands and build its love for the water and retrieving.

My black lab has probably 5k wrapped up in it and she’s at the HR title. About to be 3. I’ve sent her off for 2-3 months stints a few times to get to the reliable retriever level. This hunting season, her third and she’s unreal. First hunting season was quite the adventure. Last year she was ok, but this season....she retrieves everything. I only make the long hunting trips now because of her. She absolutely loves to go hunting. Looses her shite when we start pulling camo out.

Edit: my dog is also kenneled up inside when we are gone. When we are home she’s inside with us. This imo hasn’t killed her hunting/working drive. When the shock collar goes on she’s a different dog. When it’s off... well she’s like a kid. She tries to get away with as much as she can. She’s a great family dog. Very friendly but a little over excited if I don’t let her run a lot.
