I know I’m late for both duck season and Christmas, but I have been trying to get some input on getting a dog for both ducks and family pet. I’m in Baton Rouge. I would rather at least a started dog but would consider a puppy should a good opportunity arise. Any input on good breeders in the area or even some dogs available? I would like to keep it under 5 grand

That should be pretty easy to do for a puppy, not sure what a trained dog cost though.

ETA: I got my labradoodle from a place in Amite called puppies in Louisiana. I don’t have any complaints and the guy also sell labs.

Call around to different trainers in the area. Trainers are always selling their client's started dogs who don't meet their standards. Don't get it in your head that the dog is is not capable to be a duck dog and family dog.

Have an upvote on me
Most Field trial dogs were raised in the house and come in when they are back home in the off season. Any dog raised and socialized in the home is smarter and more tractable than one who only lives out in the kennel. Plan to travel, don't get caught up in the gotta have it today mentality. Shoot me an email @ kemosabe65@yahoo.com for a good honest trainer i have bought multiple started dogs from in Texas.

Check our Rodrigues Cajun K-9 on fakebook, they have affordable pups that come from great blood lines.

You can get a good gundog for under 5k. Will do just about anything the average hunter wants(Forced, Steady for marks, simple land and water blinds). Make sure to spend some time watching the dog train/work and understand its abilities and temperament before purchase. There are alot of good ones out there, but also alot of junk. Just have to take your time and do a thorough search. RetrieverTraining Forum, hunting lab pedigree, and entry express all have classified pages.

6013234581 give this # a call. He had a real nice little dog available recently. maybe shes still around.

Purchased my lab from PrizeMyEyes in Breaux Bridge. LINK but you’d be looking at a puppy and not a started dog.

also, when watching them work, ask them to run a retrieve that you set up. dog can have run the same thing 100x and look amazing. throw them a completely new set up and they fail miserably. generally if you work with a reputable trainer you should be ok.

Don't do this, over priced mutts from a "c" level breeder and trainer. Wild Irish Rose is a marketing scheme for the gullible "Gentlemen Hunters"

when I ran a corp lodge.. customers would sometimes ask to use "their Dogs" I would say If the dog is steady ok...... about 15 dogs..... tried.. only 1 was "steady"..... double mark with a dead fall about 75 yards out.... live flopping and quacking fall with a big splash slightly out of sight at fall....... only one.. was "steady" the second one was a wipeout mark as well. the dogs with controlled breaks never got the first mark.

Buy a puppy, there’s nothing like establishing the bond early on. Spend about $1000 for the pup, which should get you a solid blood line. Come back here at around 5-6 months and find you a reputable trainer in your area.

In that 5-6 month time period you can/should teach your dog a handful of easy commands and build its love for the water and retrieving.

My black lab has probably 5k wrapped up in it and she’s at the HR title. About to be 3. I’ve sent her off for 2-3 months stints a few times to get to the reliable retriever level. This hunting season, her third and she’s unreal. First hunting season was quite the adventure. Last year she was ok, but this season....she retrieves everything. I only make the long hunting trips now because of her. She absolutely loves to go hunting. Looses her shite when we start pulling camo out.

Edit: my dog is also kenneled up inside when we are gone. When we are home she’s inside with us. This imo hasn’t killed her hunting/working drive. When the shock collar goes on she’s a different dog. When it’s off... well she’s like a kid. She tries to get away with as much as she can. She’s a great family dog. Very friendly but a little over excited if I don’t let her run a lot.

I just got a puppy from Waterproof Retrievers in Houma. My puppy is a little over nine weeks and she is already well-mannered and able to sit, stay, come, and sight retrieve short to medium distances. I train my labs myself using water dog and tips I've picked up along the way, but this puppy clearly has great genes. As of a few days ago, there were several males and one female still remaining from her litter, which was with Rayne and Tippe. I believe Rayne just passed his first master national. Both are hunt test dogs with exceptional bloodlines. I cant remember exactly, but think I only paid $1250, which is a fantastic price for the bloodline.
