Hello fellas my black lab was bit by a snake today on the face. Does anyone know what to do for home remedies. Tried giving him benadryl but can't get him to open his mouth.

know what kind of snake? Rattle? Moccasin?..coral?
Matters if it's a hemotoxin or neurotoxin.
More info would be helpful if you have..

It's a dog that loves water.
Let it rest and keep and eye on it.
Animals manage these things much better than humans

We have no idea what kind it was, he was out side playing and came running in. We see more rattle snakes then anything around here.but not sore.
He was bit on the side of his snout. Has alot of swelling in face and neck.

My lab was bit by a copperhead on the neck and she swelled up like a softball and was real lethargic and then the next day she was fine..... They do handle these things better

My beagle got bit right on the nose by a copperhead. Ended up taking her to ER because the swelling was so bad it closed her nasal passages and she couldn't breathe.
They pumped her full of fluids pretty much. Besides sticking a tube in her nose to keep it open.
If she won't open her moyth, she probably isn't going to drink or eat. And that would be your issue...she needs hydration.

Mine get bit pretty regular. They swell up, look terrible and get real lethargic fora couple days than go back to normal. It will be fine

My son in California had two mini doxies bitten on their snouts by rattlesnakes. They had swollen potato sized snouts for a few days, were lethargic for several days, but recovered. Two weeks later they were completely back to normal.

If you care about your dog take it to a vet now!

The only concern is if it is bitten and swelling closes its breathing passages.
Vet can't give it anti venom or anything.
But small animal vets always have 300k in student loans so I'm sure they will be happy to see you

3J's,
Google "snake bite merck veterinary manual" and see how much a vet can do for that dog. Including antivenom.
And most medical professionals (physicians, dentists) have student loans and are happy to see you visit their practice. Are there silly people who run up to 300K student debts--sure, but this is not "always" true for vets.

I had a Griffon bittern by a moccasin. His paw was swollen to about 2x normal size. I was 3 hours from my vet so I googled it and it said baby aspirin. It seemed to work. He was fine the next day.

How are they going to give antivenom without knowing the snake that bit the dog.

If you to part with $200 or more take to a vet. If not give it some pain meds. Benadryl may not do much to the allergic reaction but it may help him sleep. Other than that just pull its collar off if it got but about the head.

Yet. frick that vet noise. Push a couple of Advil down his throat and get some sleep. You'll both feel better in the morning.

Not sure but I carry anitvenom down in Costa Rica. It works on 18 of the 20 venomous species. Coral and bushmaster, you're shite out of luck.

What horrible advice.
OP, most snake bites aren't fatal (even if it's from a rattlesnake or moccasin) so the odds are with your pup. There are definitely some life threatening conditions that develop secondary to snake bites.
Still, those bites are known to be extremely painful and personally I'd at least want some pain medication if I were bitten. If the bite was around the face or neck there's much higher risk of closing off his airway = fatal.
Under no circumstances would I give aspirin, ibuprofen, etc... to a dog with a snake bite. The venom can cause abnormalities in their ability to clot blood - the last thing you want to do is give them a drug that also interferes with blood clotting (like Advil... )
While on the subject of Advil (ibuprofen) - pretty dumb to give this to any dog in any situation. There are ok doses of other NSAID type drugs your vet can probably recommend but ibuprofen is known to cause stomach ulcers at even low doses.
Re Antivenom: Most people use CroFab now so it does not matter that you don't know the species of snake that bit him. Crofab is helpful for either rattlers or moccasins. (nobody uses it for copperheads really)
