My feeder has a spring loaded outer portion that shuts off the holes when anything heavier than a bird is on it. Squirrels don't even try anymore.

+1

Every now and then a squirrel will still get on mine and the cage will get stuck, but that's become very rare.

I throw corn on the ground for the squirrels so my dog can chase them. There is a small oak that that she chases them up every day all day. My dog is obsessed with the tree. She sits outside every day staring at the tree waiting on the squirrels. Once in the tre I will shake them out and let my dog chase them.

The other day I hear my litte girl outside yelling my dogs name. I look outside and she is trying to shake the tree, yelling get those squirrels.
Thats my girl

I installed an electric fence zapper and coiled copper wires up the pole with alternating pos and neg coils all insulated from metal pole with PVC pipe. Not a single squirrel (or raccoon) has eaten a single seed from the feeder in the 10 yrs since. They roam around the ground eating what the birds drop, but they now know better than try to climb the pole. If I accidently touch the pos wire while filling the feeder, I almost crap in my pants. Must be very careful.
