I have been kayak fishing for a while now and want to purchase my own. Anyone know of a place to get a used one? I figure buying used to start out would be a better move. Thanks in advance

Try Craigslist for a used one

But you can find a decent kayak for around $300 for new at Academy or BPS

Yes, you can get a fishing kayak at Academy for $300-$400. You don't need a $3000 kayak. It will be the best thing you ever bought -- I have had a blast fishing out of mine!

Sorry but the $300-400 from Academy are junk - lots of unused space and subpar plastics. If you are in Louisiana, go check out what Massey's outfitters has...
In my opinion, when it comes to fishing kayaks...
Hobie Pro Angler is the best make and model on the market (sometimes have used ones on ebay). Next is Ultimate brand then Ocean brand then Old Town brand. I have an Old Town 140K Predator kayak - tricked out sit-in style. I have an Old Town 14' Adventurer for sale if you are interested.

Yeah, you don't need to spend a fortune on a fishing kayak. I have a couple which I use for protected waters and am going to build one out of wood next winter.

I got this thing though for choppier waters, really like it.

Pass on the ones sold at Academy and other stores for $300. Get a used kayak from one of the more reputable brands like Native, Ocean Kayak, or Wilderness Systems. Hobies are probably out of your price range for your first kayak. I have a Wilderness Systems and an Ocean Kayak, both have been great.

Check Craigslist for some used boats in your area. Nothing wrong with a used yak, they take a beating just fine. If your location is correct, check out Austin Canoe and Kayak. They have a great store and staff, and you may be able to buy one of their demo boats.

My cheap one takes a beating too. I have run that thing over oyster shells, etc. I guarantee I can catch just as many redfish in mine as anybody can in their "fancy" kayaks. If I wear mine out in ten years, I can go buy a brand new one.

Try the backpacker. A guy I went to school with started a company making fishing kayaks and has sold them through both the Backpacker and Ducks Unlimited from what I have heard. Supposedly reviews have been very solid.

Yes, the cheap ones can also take a beating. And I agree, you can catch plenty of redfish in them, because I have as well. But having fished them both, I feel like I can say with confidence that Natives, OK's, etc have much better layouts for your gear, track better, turn better, are less tippy, have better seats, and are more comfortable to fish out of. And if you look around, you can generally find a used one fully rigged for the price of a new "cheap" one.

I'm not trying to knock the cheap ones, but I've used many different brands and believe that you're better off with a used "fancy" kayak.

me and a buddy have owned 2 ocean kayak prowler 13s for a few years now, done inshore and offshore very well
spent 600 bucks on one from a guy that he didn't use one time(got lucky with that)

got it rigged out with 3 rod holders, a fish finder, nice back saver seat, anchor trolley, and buncha different accessories and shite.. it's a blast pulling in sharks on that thing

as far as finding them used:
craigs list
bckfc.org
texaskayakfisherman.com

can all be helpful tools
