Anyone ever have to deal with gators approaching their kayak?

The peddle drive is cool if you are in open water, but in shallows or stumpy areas, it sucks. Also, it let's a lot of water on the boat.
You do make a valid argument here, I think the draft on mirage drive is 1'-1.5'. So in these situations you can just pull the peddle drive out, simple as pulling it up I believe, and then hand paddle. That could become a nuisance if you consistently fish over rock/oyster bottom shallows.

I really disliked how many casts I could get in before having to paddle again.
This could be a problem with all kayaks. You learn to drift fish with the wind, anchor up, or just keep your rod between your legs for quickly switching between your paddle and rod.

yea, last time it happened i lost my right arm

I would probably deal with it the same as in my boat. Paddle to the head.

Neck, if I get a new kayak, can I get in on the rodeo out of Cocodrie?

Yeah there are no restrictions on what you catch them out of as long as it's rod/reel
Boat, yak, wading, sitting on a bucket, doesn't matter to me

Buy a stand up paddleboard. At least a stand up yak.

I had a small one get curious in a pond I was fishing. Probably between 2 - 3'. Paddle to the head worked out fine.

if you ever try a Mirage drive you will see you can go shallow using "short strokes" where the fins don’t do a full sweep. Its slower but it works in 6" of water. The fins flutter like a stingray using this method. With the Native foot drive you need to pull it out as it doesn’t work unless you have the full 1.5' of water.

IMO, nothing beats a hobie for fishing the gulf. It is fast, stable and made for fishing. But to fish the marsh, i choose to get something that gets super shallow and something i can stand and sight fish in rather than a peddle system I had to take in and out to use due to shallow water and floating grass that gets caught in the peddles. But for those interested, the Hobie Outback is super stable and easy to stand in and the pro angler is a damn boat. But i don't recommend paddling either over a long distance. All have their pros and cons, there really isn't one perfect yak, just find the one that is best for you.

ur assend better than a mirage drive hobie that has 10x the accessories, access to fishing gear, hands free paddling so that you can fish while moving, better stability and over all much better quality materials than an ascend
the accessories are cool and I like the storage it has but I went out in two different hobies and the werent nearly as stable as my ascend. I tried to stand it and It wasnt going to happen.
quote:
slow? I just flat out disagree with you and I've fished with many people who use these, you can't out paddle a mirage drive. If you can, it's only off the get go.
without the mirrage drive I feel like it is a slower yak. This is because it doesnt track well. every hard stroke has it going another direction. If fact the group of guys I fish with raced and the two hobies finished last behind two ascends, an ocean, and some other one I cant remember. Also, the rudder system didnt work at for shite.
quote:
i don't even get soaked in my ocean kayak.. if you're worried about getting wet, put in the scupper plugs or don't go fishing
There is a difference in getting wet and getting soaked. I get wet in my kayak but thew few time i went on in the hobie I was soaked. I understand that you will get a little wet no matter what but I would like to be as dry as possible. That being said, I didnt know it had scupper plugs. The hobies I went in werent mine and didnt have the plugs in when I went. Im sure that would have made a difference.
quote:
cramped- how is a sit on top more cramped than a SIK???
the hobie has a molded in seat area and foot spots and is narrower than my ascend. sitting in it is not nearly as comfortable as my ascend which has an awesome seat and plenty of space. Mine is wider but has an almost pontoon like hull design that decreases the surface area on the water and allows it to be somewhat fast. I can stretch out and ride very comfortably in my FS12. The seat in the hobie flat out suck. If you sit in and FS12 you will certainly agree.
quote:
in no way a Hobie fan boy, don't even own one but these criticisms are uninformed and ridiculous.
I have been in 2 different (the were the same model) hobie kayaks. each time was for about an hour. You can disagree with my opinions, but they are not uninformed nor are they ridiculous.
have you been in ascend? specifically the FS12. I know that it isnt the top of the line kayak and there are things that I like better on the hobie, but that being said, I still prefer my kayak to the hobies I used.
Im pretty sure the ones my buddies have is the revolution.

I went out with a friend with an older mirage drive this past weekend. I didn't take it for a spin, but I did notice that where the pedals are, there was a whole bunch of water coming in there. Is it the same with the newer models? Also, his yak did sit way lower in the water than mine.

I'm really not this insufferable irl.
