Seldom needed when the gun is seldom used.

On other guns it's called a charging handle.

I don't have one on my main competition AR. 10-15k rounds later I have yet to need a FA. I hate to clean my guns. I would say its around 1k rounds before each cleaning

Sounds like it’s settled then.

Forward assist is necessary for ensuring the bolt is closed quietly or in the event of increased friction or reduced spring force during a life or death situation.

I use it when I realease the charging handle like a pussy, but it's mostly for peace of mind.

I broke one of my dust covers and haven't replaced it which made me ask this question about that.

With an AR, the charging handle can only pull backwards on the bolt. It can't push forwards on it. Most other rifles, you can push the bolt forward with the charging handle, so they don't need a forward assist.

These rifles were designed to work in extreme conditions, part of those conditions is when some parts start wearing out. The drive spring (aka buffer spring) has a definite lifespan, it starts getting weak then it won't send the bolt fully into battery if there's crud in the way and that's where you want a forward assist.
