I've driven a jack-up boat across it at Tiger Pass.

Rode down on a tanker with my pilot friend about a year ago.

Busy and fast. Things can happen quicker than you realize.

When I was a youngster we took a 12 ft flat from the gulf dock in venice to the mouth of south pass....the old coast guard station....

To say it was hairy is a colossal understatement.....

And we had a lifeline at pilot town

If you have to ask, I say no. It may be safe for someone experienced, but you do not sound experienced since you ask.

If you motor hadn't recently been submerged, then maybe yes, but judging by your track record, I would avoid even semi-dangerous situations if I were you.

I caught these two blues right off the bank near LSU in the MS. Catch similar sizes nearly every time I go. I'm not as brave as diesel, since I've seen some serious swells right there when a freighter comes through, but the river is loaded as frick.

When I was at LSU we used to drive down River Road, south of campus, and canoe to a small island in the river and throw wild parties. We were just extremely drunk college kids with an aluminum canoe and a couple of wooden paddles. We all survived (somehow).

Most of the time it is. Last summer I got in some heavy barge traffic I've never seen before and my 18 ft. express had all it wanted. Must have been some 8+ ft waves for a few moments.

We used to tight line at the white castle ferry at night. Man we'd catch some nice catfish.

We used to take a 17ft lake skiff with a 40 duck hunting down to Pilottown. I have had better times

I had a near death in my 17' under the new bridge in St.Fran when the water was high in 2011. Will NEVER try to navigate that again.

Combo of wind, current, waves from barges, a debris. Went through a daylight center of the river under the bridge. Was bad but manageable. Coming back up river agaisnt current and waves I was looking up at. Couldn't get out of it had to go 1/2 mile up river before I could angle towards the bank.

All this was in a 17' bass boat with an oversized motor and almost full tank of gas. Was not cool. I've run that river a ton in everything from skiffs to 26' Safe Boats. Never been that scared and will never navigate that spot in my boat again

river under the bridge

You ever slow down an pay attention to your depth finder just north of there???? Stopped to piss one day and watched it go from like 35' to 95' all the way till south of cells by big cajun!!!! River was up pretty high, but there is a serious dropoff/hole that is about 3/4 mile long right there. With the wind blowing up the river and the current running hard with hard water against the wind, creates a whit eknuckle experience!!!
Just stick to running north from the landing and you will be allright!!!
Only go south when river is really low! (from an original founder of the good friday sache' who has spent ALOT of time on that river in anything from a 14' bateau with a 20 HP to my skiff now)
