Just check you ballistics in whatever bullet your using. You need 1500 lb-ft of energy to safely snd ethically kill and elk.

If your range is only 300 yards with a 270, then don't take any shots longer than that. It's that simple.

Also remember, the bigger the bullet grain, the more energy it will have. It will also have more drop, though, so be sure you know your zero and your aiming.

Personally, if I were going elk hunting in a mountain range, I'd want a 7 Mag or bigger.

But I would also feel quite comfortable with a 270 at shorter distances. Just makes sure you have a badass round for it. You can never ever go wrong with Nosler Partition balistic tip. Do not use some stupid fragmenting match bullet for knocking off an elk at 200 yds.

Just to bump this to point out the idiot that downvoted T4 for saying neck shots don't impress him

after getting shot in the neck.

Worse than neck shot is head shot.Ignorant neighbor like to shoot his deer in the head unless it’s mountable. His rationale is either kill them instantly or miss and don’t mess up any meat.I asked him what if he misses the wrong way and blows up the jawbone, long miserable death for the deer.
Some people shouldn’t be allowed to hunt.

To each his own. I personally think head shots are fine if you practice often with your rifle and are confident in your shooting abilities. The odds of blowing a deer's jawbone off without it being fatal are so slim that I'm willing to take that chance. I would argue that it is much more likely for a deer to experience a prolonged miserable death from bad shot placement to the body than a bad shot to the dome.

A friend of mine shot a mule deer 4 or five times. Excellent shot placement on all. Didn't stay down until the last shot.

Same friend shot a moose. One shot. Same rifle. Never moved an inch

I vote yes.

Nilgai, lol

You aren't kidding. I was on a Winchester hunt at the King Ranch when they first introduced the short mags. I couldn't believe the punishment those animals took. Unreal.

I've seen it happen twice. Headshots are horribly unethical. Its the smallest target on an animal and it moves the most, and about half of it is jaw/snout.

And i would argue that the shooter is much more likely to make a bad shot on the small twitchy target than he is on the bigger stationary target.

this isnt even debatable.

Ive seen several living deer with missing lower jaws. an inch can make all the difference in the world on headshots (and neckshots too for that matter). Thats a strong gust of wind at 150 yards, or misjudging the distance by 75 yards, or a microscopic movement of scope mounts.
