Inverter generator heads up
Howdy all,

I just purchased what I believe is the perfect inverter generator, for my needs.

Everyone knows Honda is king. Honda is also more than I want to spend on something that will only get used a handful times per year.

I had a 6500 watt generator and never backfeed the house and plan on getting a 22kw unit this winter. Sold the 6500 generator and got something that would run a couple window units and two refrigerators.

Enter: Champion 4500 watt inverter generator

Champion is not the most renowned brand, but the price was right. The gas tank is also 4 gallons and they state that it will run 23 hours on one tank at 1/4 load. It does have an eco mode for smaller loads as well.

Only cons that I can find, so far: its only sold at Tractor Supply. Their website is terrible and many store state that they are in stock, but they rarely are. I drove to Orange, TX to get mine. Also, the 30amp plug is an RV plug. Hard to find an extension cord that splits into regular 5-15R outlets, but they do exist. Actually, got one from Home Depot online.

I added a wheel kit and a cover for around $50, so I am invested $550 total. I can buy 4 Champion inverter generators vs a Honda EU3000 and have 50% more power. Ill crank it a month before each hurricane season and make sure its good to go, if not, Ill grab a new one.

I researched this for weeks before pulling the trigger. I was very close to going with a Generac inverter, but they are not as powerful and much smaller fuel tank. Even the Harbor Freight Predator 3500 falls short on this and is more expensive.

Hope this helps someone.

Everybody else is a copy, they are such close copies you can use Honda parts interchangeably on the Chonda motors.

If it had a 240 receptacle you could set it up to run the electric panel and not have to run extension cords all over the place.

re: Inverter generator heads up
It’s a small, portable inverter generator. I’m not sure of any inverter generator that has 240 outlets, besides the largest Honda one. Even the Honda eu3000 doesn’t have one.

I wish it got 10,000 hours between oil changes, but it’s not a con that nothing goes that long.

I've had a CPE 4500W standard-type generator for years, never had a problem with it. I installed an extra fuel valve so I could drain the fuel tank. Do that, run the generator until it dies, empty the carb bowl and put a splash of MMO or Stabil in it, can sit years and will fire up on the first pull when you put fresh gas in it next time you need it.

I don't know why the 3-4000 watt inverter generators can't output 240. I have a Wen 3500 starting/3000 running watt non inverter generator that does.

I need a small generator for next hurricane season but don't want to spend a lot. This helps me have something else to consider other than Honda or Harbor Freight.

The 120 volt AC output of inverter generators is created electronically from the output of a DC generator allowing the engine to run at variable speed for fuel economy and still produce a 60HZ line frequency. To produce 240 volts would require another independent inverter designed to to output 240 voltsAC, more circuitry, more cost to manufacture. A non-inverter generator with 240 vac output uses a alternator with a winding for 240 votts, and simply splits the winding in half for the 120 volt outputs. Most of these generators drive the alternator directly from the engine requiring the engine to always run at 3600rpm regardless of load in order to produce the required 60HZ line frequency, burns more fuel, makes more noise.

Looks like TS in Leesville is the only place in LA to pick one up.

If you want truthful, real people reviews go to your favorite camping forum and enter portable generators. Champion is very well represented...

I wasnt trying to bash it by any means, shit, I bought one. But, its not a Honda and I love that I didnt pay Honda money for it. Shoot, its the same price as a Predator 2,000 watt inverter generator. How can you possibly go wrong with the Champion?

Again, lots of TS say they are in stock. Call before you drive even a mile to see. I called 6 locations that had them listed in stock, but ended up going all the way to Orange TX before a manager could actually put their hands on one.

Finally, heads up, there is a non inverter 3650/4500 watt Champion generator that several managers said was the one I wanted. Make sure they see the words "inverter" on the box.

I ran a Champion conventional 7500 after Michael for 3 week under some pretty good loads. I have zero complaints.

re: Inverter generator heads up
Because it would only pull 16 amps. I have the big Honda generator and I don’t even use the 240 outlet. I have a “cheater” kit that pulls from 2 different circuits to get 240 volts.
