I am looking at a backpacking trip that has a stretch of river I would like to raft down. Zero water experience and not looking to spend $300-$1000 for a 10 mile run. This Intex raft looks perfect, and I have seen a few people online that have used on calm waters in lakes and on the Colorado River near Canyonlands.

The specific section I am looking at is here. Says Class 2-3 rapids. Late June/early July target date.

I will not be attempting the sections before and after which are much more advanced. Just thought it would be cool to float through a calm stretch of the Rio Grande Gorge rather than spend the day trekking across BLM or Indian land. Plus the views.

Anyone have experience with this cheap raft?

Am I an idiot to think I can just put in on the mighty Rio and not die? Just a little bit of research and video makes me think it is doable and would be quite fun.

Looks something like this:

Just kidding, more like this:

I’d sure as hell try it but I’m a strong swimmer, worst case scenario you get a hilarious story about the time you tried to raft the Rio Grande in a $15 wal mart boat for kids

The worst case scenario is you drown and die using a $12 boat and Darwin's theory is reaffirmed.

I think you need a rubber ducky raft!

I figured spend $20 on a raft and then $400 on a GoPro to film the debacle.

Don’t go cheap on the life jacket and don’t pack anything in the boat that you can’t afford to lose and you should be good to go

can be run in canoes (with flotation), kayaks or rafts by most paddlers with strong intermediate or higher level whitewater skills
so you have any experience?

American Whitewater says

Access is very difficult for those who just want to paddle the II/III.

What time of year (will it have water)? Maybe a good size innertube (think truck tire) might be a better bet?
